Presenting a Promise John 14:7-14

Sermon Nuggets Fri Sept 12

Theme Preparing for Parting

Verses John 14:7-14 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."
8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."
9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.
11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.
12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. (NIV)

Jesus Presents a Promise for Us
Before His parting Jesus makes His Divinity clear to His disciples. He wanted to reveal the Father by having them see Himself. If you want to see the Father, look at Jesus. If you want to see Jesus look at the Father. All that Jesus had done and has said is from the Father.

Now Jesus is going to depart and be with the Father and the challenge is given to these special 11 friends. They are going to do greater thing that Jesus did while on earth. Whatever they ask of Him in his name the Son will do so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.

In choosing the word "Father" to represent God, Jesus chose a word that is both warm and reassuring. It combines both authority and approachability. Ideally speaking, to a child a father is one who is capable and competent in any situation. He represents power, provision, and protection. He is the source of the child's security. The child should feel completely safe within his care.

I am constantly amazed each Olympics how new records are broken, how athletes continue to build upon those before theme. I am at wonder how newer discoveries and new technology goes beyond the things done previously. But Christ is different from all the rest of us. If He were only a man why has He not been reduplicated or surpassed? If he was simply a product of evolution why did the human race peak 2,000 years ago? Why with our advance in knowledge haven't we had new record breakers and people of influence greater than Jesus? There is no more of God that can be shown than was seen in Jesus Christ.

So when Jesus said that one day the disciples would do what He did, why has that not happened? How can anyone do greater than Jesus? That passage has often bothered me, until I read how the church has been unleashed, with the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus never left Palestine and the gospel was limited to the embodiment of Christ's earthly body. When Peter preached and the Spirit was released in power 3,000 people were saved. Now we have the privilege of the power of Jesus in each life in the Holy Spirit. Prayer is availing us to Jesus now.
What a promise!

Presenting A Person for us John 14:6

Sermon nuggets Thurs Sept 11

Theme Preparing for Parting

Verses- 6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (NIV)

Presenting a Person for Us.
The path to the Father is Jesus Christ. But to affirm our faith and trust in Him Jesus also presents more of his character and being.

Jesus said, "I am the truth." How can we determine what is true and false? We have been lied to and we have been deceived by people in this world. I am not talking about just the promises of politicians, but more realistically close friends, and family members, fellow Christians and church members and have sadly disappointed us. We have heard the false testimony of clergymen and it is easy to understand the cynicism of our day and the lack of faith in people. In our day we have seen the rise of incest, the abuses of school teachers on their students, the graft among police and judges. People whom we have trusted in the past have abused their roles for personal greed and gain.

Jesus is truth. How do we know that? Jesus said if you don't believe me because of my words, then believe me because of my works. He did come and authenticate His message through the miracles that people saw and testified to 1,000s followed Him wherever he went. The miracles of Jesus were not to make our life easier or convenient, but to authenticate the messenger or the message.

The teachings of a man who teaches science is not much affected by his character. The multiplication tables are true regardless of the character of the man who teacher them. But to teach moral truth character is all important. A thief cannot teach honestly, an embittered man cannot teach love. Jesus can truthfully said, "I myself am the embodiment and personification of all that I have taught you." He is truth.

If there was any reason why we should sit up and take notice when Jesus said, "I am the truth." It was the resurrection that turned the world upside down. People cannot explain it today. The empty tomb still calls people to accept the fact that something super dramatic happened 2000 years ago that changed the disciples, changed Jerusalem, changed Rome, and changed the world.

When Jesus said He is the truth we see people who trusted Him and had their lives changed. An adulterer turned pure, a grasping greedy tax collector start giving money away to the poor., A domineering demanding personality become a servant willingly, A bitter and hate filled man was moved to love and share in gentleness. Lazarus who was dead came to life again. So when Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life, whoever believes in me shall never die", that is truth because of his character his words, the miracle, the life and the death and the resurrection of the one who spoke those words. They are trustworthy for they came of the son of God.

Jesus is the Life. "I have come that you might have life and have it more abundantly" he said. We have more meaningful lives now if you are a follower and believer in Jesus Christ and secondly and more importantly you are the obtainer of eternal life forever with God. When Jason Wilkman was kidnapped and his parents didn't know whether he was alive or dead they had a faith that said, "Either Jason is with Jesus or Jesus is with Jason." Either way in faith that is life.

Death is separation of our body from our souls. Death Spiritually is also defined as separation from God. When Jesus says that He is the life, by having faith in him there is a time when our souls will be reunited with our body's by the power alone of Jesus. He is our life. And there is a reuniting of our souls with the Eternal God. There is life now and forever. No one else can promise you that , there is no other name given among men whereby we must be saved. If we accept God's free gift of Jesus Christ we have a place in heaven.

Presenting a Path John 14:5,6

Sermon nuggets Weds Sept 10

Theme: Preparing for Parting

Verses: John 14:5-6 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"
6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (NIV)

Jesus Presents Path for Us.
Coming from Michigan reminds me of one of the great bureaucratic errors in a small town there. They built a public facility in the town, $1 million was federally funded for a community center to use for senior citizen use and township fire department and other things. But for a
long time it remained vacant. There were no roads connecting the building with the community. The Federal grant did not allow for a road. The county did not feel it had the money to spend to build a road. Someone got the money but the building was a waste since it wasn’t used. One of the development representatives said, "When we approved the project we must have assumed there was a road there." Why have something that no one can get to.

Jesus prepares for us a home in the eternal heavens. He is also that road for us to get there.

My Father worked for the Rail Road for some 38 years before he died. One of the benefits our family enjoyed was free train passes. We'd make use of them every now and again. I remember one trip we took to Chicago. I was small and overwhelmed by the large train depots. I was dwarfed by the enormous engines and car after car of the people in my childhood that road the trains, unlike today. I remember reading the huge wall sized schedule in Chicago and it was confusing. I didn't understand all the confusion of the train numbers, the time of departure, finding the track number, the car, the booths, the seats and the places of transfer. I couldn't understand any of that. But my dad did and he would take me by the hand and I would walk with him and we'd eventually end up at our destination. My Dad became the way for me to get to where we were going. In just that real way Jesus is the road and the way for us to the Father.

John 3:16 tell us that God's love was so great that He gave to us his only son Jesus, that if we believe on Him we will have eternal life. It is an old story one that we have heard many times, but there is newness to it. Jesus died on the cross for our sins, He paid the penalty that we deserved. By putting your faith in Him and what he did we are on our way to heaven. The way to heaven is not by being member of church, being baptized, giving money away, helping others or praying as worthy and important as those might be, it is trusting in Jesus as the only way to the Father. Putting your hand in his and letting him lead you. You don't have to understand it all, just to trust him.

Not everyone who dies goes to heaven. Only those who have accepted Jesus offer for salvation, only the ones who have desired to put their lives in Jesus control. He is the way out of our sin through his death that gives us forgiveness and pardon. He is the way through the problem and difficulties that face us by giving us his abiding presence. He is the way into heaven

Preparing a Place John 14:1-4

Sermon nuggets Tues Sept 9

Theme: Preparing for Parting

Verses- John 14:1-4 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.
2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
4 You know the way to the place where I am going."

Jesus Prepares a Place for Us
During the table talk before the cross, Jesus knew the disciples were going to be grief stricken and in sorrow. How do you prepare loved ones for death? Do you tell them not to cry? Do you tell them not to feel badly? I remember one man told his friends he wanted them to have a party and celebration in honor of his passing. But let’s remember that funerals are for the living not the dead. Sometimes the requests and advice we give doesn't really fit the circumstances or those one leaves behind.

Jesus knew they would grieve, but he also knew that He would rise from the dead. Instead of troubled hearts He wanted them to have trusting hearts. He not only wanted to prepare them for that hope, but also the time when he was going to be gone from them from the earth. At the time of the resurrection, Jesus' earthly ministry is done and his heavenly ministry begins. Jesus' work isn't finished, it has been relocated. Jesus' work for our salvation was finished at the cross. His job on earth was to seek and save that which is lost. He had fulfilled all that the Father had given Him to do on the earth, but now our Savior and Lord is preparing for us a place in heaven. He is interceding on our behalf before the Father. Jesus tells them there are many rooms in His Father's house and He is going to prepare for them a place.

The story has been told of a young lady saving her money to see the big city. She went to a fancy hotel. As the Bell hop was taking her to her room, she complained that it was much too small and there were no windows for the view. The man was take back and said, "Ma'am this is the elevator, I will take you to the room prepared for you."

It is a good to remember that this life this isn't the place that Jesus has prepared for us. This is not all that there is. In fact, we cannot imagine the greatness of heaven except in some ways that tickle our fancy. Roads paved with gold. 12 foundations of precious gems.

I realize there are lots of opinions in the book of Revelation as to what is literal and what is figurative. In the type of language used there are many picture images to explain what John found hard to put into words. Whether the streets are gold or God’s way to show the vast difference between what we value will be like dirt in heaven, doesn’t really make a difference. The point is- it will be wonderful beyond our wildest imaginations. Our life here is only a temporary stay to get us to the place Jesus has prepared for us in heaven where there will be no worry of bills, or breakdowns, no worry about meals, or poverty. All that we need is provided.

But of greatest importance is that Jesus is there. Heaven is where Christ is. It isn't the building that makes a home, it is the love of the people who live there. And the doctrine of the Second Coming tells us plainly that He is returning to take us there. He is coming again, are you ready if he were to come today?

Preparing a Peace for Us. John 14:1

Sermon Nuggets Mon. Sept 8

Theme- Preparation for Parting

Verses: John 14:1 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. (NIV)

Prepares a Peace for Us.
As I had been listening to both the Democratic and Republican conventions these last two weeks I heard the presidential candidates and their running mates come up with one main message. “Trust me.” They want us to get to know them and their ideas that will bring us into a stable times for the United States. They are promoting not only their plans but themselves. The election plan is to present themselves in such a manner they get the trust of the American people.

Obviously whomever we trust the most will probably get our vote. That trust is combined with persons, plans, procedures, party, participation, and people. (Hey that could be another sermon!) The times we are living in are very troublesome times. The theme of threat of war and instability is part of why American people need to trust a person. The economy, ecology, and energy are part of the problems that the candidates want to address so that we can trust them for the best way to govern our country.

As Jesus was preparing his disciples for his departure, He pointed first to Himself. He wanted them to trust Him. They had all come from various walks of life before they met Jesus. For the past three-and-a-half years that had been with Jesus life had been good. They had seen countless miracles, healings, deliverances, walking on water, calming the storm, feeding the 5,000, and even raising the dead. They had spent the past years listening to the greatest teachings ever spoken. Further, because they expected that Jesus would literally overthrow the Roman government and set up his kingdom in Jerusalem, they were excited because Jesus had gained popularity and they were on the inside of the movement. They had no reason to expect that in the very near future all of their expectations and hopes would fall apart. They had no idea of the crisis they were about to be put through, that Jesus would be arrested, beaten, tried, and crucified.

However, Jesus knew what was about to take place, and he wanted to prepare them for what was ahead. So, he explained to them what was about to happen. Previously he had made references to his death, but in a way that they could not understand. Now, he wanted them to really understand what he was saying, so he spoke clearly with them.

Now, none of us likes change. None of us likes uncertainty. We’re always going to have a certain level of worry when we know that hard times are ahead of us. However, we can by examining Jesus’ discourse with the disciples, learn how to get through those times without worrying. And the first thing he says to them is “You trust in God, now trust in me.” And this is really the foundation for finding peace to get through these tough times. All of the other things that he said to them were hinged upon this one secret. Trust in Him. He is the person in whom we can trust. If they trust God with their lives and future, then they can trust Jesus with their lives and future. He is to trusted as God is trusted, for He is God.

He goes on to explain some of the reasons and the ways that they can trust in him, but he never really moves beyond trust as the thing that will get them through. Isaiah 26:3, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you!”

Where is that line between being trusting and being gullible? Certainly there are people that have been taken advantage of who no longer trust anyone. Unfortunately there are people that refuse to believe in Jesus or in Jesus teachings for the same reason. Jesus has revealed God to those around him. People have doubted and refused to trust in the very one that can save them for all eternity. Sometimes it is a tragedy not to trust, and not to believe.

In the passage from the Bible this week we will see Jesus teaching one of the most important lessons in the Gospel of John. He gives hope, truth, and a meaningful concise presentation of the Gospel message. But is begins with laying out the foundation that to be prepared for your life starts with really trusting Jesus. That give me hope also for the future of our nation. It isn’t in the human government, but in the person of Jesus Christ. It isn’t in the security of the United States of America it is in the security of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This world and nation will pass away, but Jesus will not. If you believe in God, believe also in me, He says. He is someone who can be trusted and that leads to peace.
