Verses - Phil 2:12-18
12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-- not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence-- continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,
13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.
14 Do everything without complaining or arguing,
15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe
16 as you hold out the word of life-- in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.
17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.
18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.
Shining
When I was working in an office in Detroit while going to High School a number of telephone calls came at once with the other party saying, "I want to be a star". I told them they had the wrong number, but calls persisted. About every half hour another few would call "I want to be a star". Finally I asked one of the callers where he was getting the information. It seemed that Motown was having auditions and letting the listening audience call and say, "I want to be a star" and they'd give them the proper information. Our number was one digit off. I was able to get the correct number and inform the misdialers how they might be a star. It begins by dialing the correct number.
I don't know if I talked to any future Motown stars that day, but I doubt it.
When I was in elementary school a neighbor girl was describing the mystery of death and informed us kids that when someone dies and they are very good they become stars in heaven and we can see them at night. I learned differently in Sunday School.
In our passage Paul talks about shining like stars in the universe. You remember the theme of Philippians is joy. Paul is writing this after suffering persecution and is jailed for his faith. He is delighted to see many come to Christ. He calls the church to unity and put aside their egos and selfishness for God's sake get along as He intended.
He called them to Have the attitude like Jesus Christ who gave up all his rights of Godhood by becoming a man and suffering in order to save us by dying on the cross. Of course, Jesus was the greatest victory and is to be praised for all eternity.
Now the call to continue your growth in the faith is presented in this ways. As they continue to grow in their faith Paul points out their lives should be shining brightly I comparison to the dark and perverted world around them.
How much are we different from those who are unsaved? Can people tell a difference? Even more importantly, how we let God work in and through us develops character not only now, but does make a difference to God and how He wants to use us as individuals and as a church body.

Sermon Nuggets Tues Sept 28 –

Shining in Perseverance.
We come to the phrase "continue to work our your salvation." That may appear to be a contradiction when the Bible clearly says that it is, ”by grace that you are saved through faith, it is a gift of God not of works, lest anyone should boast." Over and again the clear message of grace is that you cannot save yourself. You must respond by accepted God's offer of salvation by believing and acting upon it by asking Jesus to come into your life and turning your will and your ways over to Him.
In the original, the word means, “working something to completion.” To work out our salvation with fear and trembling” is to complete that which was already begun by the person and work of Christ on the cross. Since salvation is a gift, we must be good stewards of the gift of salvation that Christ already has given us purchased by His own blood. The context of the passage talks of conforming ourselves in a humble and obedient manner. We must live out our lives until our task is completed that God has for us.
Paul is concerned that they live right when he is around and live different when he isn't. I remember when our minister would pay a surprise visit on our house mom, would rush around and have all us all, dash madly around the house to clean it up as much as we could with the 2 minutes warning. Now I wonder how much dashing around is done when I knock on the door? As a pastor I generally don't make surprise visits like the older days.
But one of the great side benefits of being a pastor is that people generally act nicer around you than when they don't know I am a pastor. I have heard some pretty good cursing, but when they embarrassingly discover I am a pastor most will clean up their language, and their jokes. They will apologize by saying, "O sorry, pastor"
To live the life that honors the Lord takes effort and persistence.
Salvation is described with three tenses. We have been saved from guilt and sin-that is the past tense. We are being saved from old habits and dominion of sin in our lives- that is a present process of salvation. And some day we will be saved in conformity to the character of Jesus Christ. We aren't there yet, but hopefully as we grow we allow the spirit to do more of a number on us. That is the future tense.
I hope you have been saved and accepted Jesus into your life by prayer and will. Now we are in the process of being saved from fleshly desires to spiritual desires, from pride to humility, from the fruit of the flesh to fruit of the spirit. That will be all our lives. We might think of working out your salvation with fear and trembling to be the call to persistence in holiness. This comes with the right relationship with the Lord. It is the continual walking and talking with the Lord that causes us growth in our Christian life..
Keep doing what you know God wants you to do. One preacher who shined in perseverance was John Wesley. He wrote in his diary for example:
Sunday, A.M., May 5 - Preached in St. Anne’s. Was asked not to come back anymore.
Sunday, P.M., May 5 - Preached in St. John’s. Deacons said "Get out and stay out." Sunday, A.M., May 12 - Preached in St. Jude’s. Can’t go back there, either.
Sunday, A.M., May 19 - Preached in St. Somebody Else’s. Deacons called special meeting and said I couldn’t return.
Sunday, P.M., May 19 - Preached on street. Kicked off street.
Sunday, A.M., May 26 - Preached in meadow. Chased out of meadow as bull was turned loose during service.
Sunday, A.M., June 2 - Preached out at the edge of town. Kicked off the highway. Sunday, P.M., June 2 - Afternoon, preached in a pasture. Ten thousand people came out to hear me.
Wesley knew the people needed to hear the message and his call kept him going out of obedience. I am afraid I would have concluded about the second time I didn’t have the gift of preaching.
When it comes to living and serving the Lord from a Biblical manner, don’t give up. Keep following through with the end in mind. Persevere.

Shining in Participation
Now there is mentioned God's part and there is our part. God's part is not only to save us, but to offer within us the power to be what he wants us to be and to do what he wants us to do. The Holy Spirit comes into our lives as a living member of the Godhead. So in that sense Christ lives in us.
I watched with amazement the abilities of a Brett Favre or Adrian Peterson. The Lord has never given to me the ability to be very athletic. But I can dream.
I don't know if you ever read the book the secret life of Walter Mitty. He is a fictional character, but I can identify with him. Walter is sort of a weak, untalented, mousy sort of character; but in his mind he imagines scenarios where he makes himself out to be a hero, very uncharacteristic to reality.
I imagine in my mind what I would do with the football if I got it, how far I could throw it. How at the last minute of the game I would catch a running and leaping catch that would cause all the fans and roars in excitement.
But what if, just what if, somehow the person of a Adrian Peterson could supernaturally be implanted in my body so I wouldn't be doing the running and the catching, but Adrian would through me? Wouldn't that be great? Dream on.
Now here is the analogy. Christ works through us so that it isn't our weakness or our inability, but His abilities to do whatever we allow Him to do according to His game plan. Now our part of it is to will it, and to do it. That doesn't mean He will do what I want and my will to be done, but rather I am willing to give him permission to work in me in the power of the Holy Spirit to do His will and carry out his purpose. In that way He partners with us by using us to accomplish His will for His glory.
What is it that Christ came to do? He came to redeem the world, but also serve others. He came to show them love, and forgiveness and kindness, and to teach truth. He came to show us how to pray and how to persist when the going gets tough. I don't have the propensity to do that. He does and is willing and desirous to work through us to accomplish his purpose and in you as well. Will we let him?
Christ is asking permission to be Lord over you life. There is one major problem- we still want control.
Bruce Wilkerson in his book, Experiencing Spiritual Breakthroughs uses an illustration of the 3 chairs. Each chair represents a person’s spiritual status before God. The first chair is not only saved, but has gone beyond accepting the gift of salvation to willfully giving permission to Christ to have authority and direction over his life. This person knows the Lord as a personal friend and Savior and is developing a meaningful and growing relationship with Him for himself and those he's responsible for.
The second chair Christian represents someone who has received new life in Christ but hasn't decided how little or much they will follow Him. They will give him permission in certain areas of their lives, but not all areas. He follows the Christian lifestyle in outward ways. But instability and inconsistency mark his course. In time, second chair person tends to slide farther away from their First chair and move close to the third chair. After awhile they may become completely indistinguishable from the person who does not know Christ as Savior. Paul calls this the carnal Christian.
This person is known as compromiser. Christ is part of the persons' life, only part.
The third chair is reserved for both the religious and non-religious person who is unsaved. This person may have grown up in a Christian family and knows about church. He may look, act, feel and think like a Christian but really never made a personal decision to invite Christ in his life. Sin characterizes the barrier between God and this person. Oh he may have gone forward at a meeting or at camp, but there is no life, no fruit, no desire for spiritual things. He lives as if God doesn't exist except when there is emergency or tragedy. But when the personal crises is over he quickly forgets about God.
You might say the first chair one has a close relationship, the second chair an acquaintance, and third chair an awareness of God. A first Chair person seeks to be shaped by the Bible, The second chair believer watches others and even other Christians and compares his life with theirs. The Third chair person looks to society and gains his values by the culture. One lives by convictions, the others by beliefs and the third by opinions. The first chair Christian submits himself to the Bible.
Christ has permission to do whatever he wants and partners with that person. The second chair Christian respects the Bible and tries to put some of the principles into practice when it seems to make sense. The third chair might own a Bible and some of the words seem inspiring, as do others thoughts. The call to permission to have this partnership is a call to will and act by the power granted to the Holy Spirit within you to obey.

Shining in Positiveness
Christians should be different from non Christians. So often you cannot tell the difference. Instead of being people who are constantly arguing or complaining, be known as an encouragers and peace loving. Are you known as a complainer? Are you one who is in conflict with lots of people? Then there is a spiritual problem and spiritual immaturity.
Don't be grumblers, complainers, people who murmur and dispute. That described the words used of the Israelites when they were coming from slavery into the promised land. Poor Moses, I really felt sorry for him. The people complained about everything. They wanted to go back to how they had it, but there never liked it how they had it when they had it that way. So many people like the good old days, but when they were living in them they were complaining just as badly.
The Israelites didn't like the food, they didn't like the journey, they didn't like the getting settled and moving around again. They didn't like it when he was up the mountain, they didn't like he when he returned. They complained about the lack of water and finally even the Lord got tired of it all.
Paul’s appeal was that the Philippians not follow in the path of the Israelites. God saved them from Egypt, but he had even more in store for them. They couldn’t get past their own petty selfishness. As a result, they spent 40 years wandering in the desert. That entire generation (with the exception of 2 men) died, never knowing the joy God had in mind for them. Let your conduct be pure and blameless, so that you can have the fullness of salvation rather than just experiencing a piece of the gift.
We don't always agree on matters. There needs to be an expression of difference of opinion when after a decision is made unless it is of course, unbiblical, then what good is it to keep brining it up again and complaining an grumbling about it. In a marriage when there is a mistake made, how many times does the husband or wife keep bring it up. It is in the past, let it go, forgive.
Be positive and uplifting. Be centered on the word of God and not trusting your own feelings. Don't live in the dark but live in the light.
Did you see the cartoon of Zits? The teen son is gloomy and mom tells him to cheer up. He puts on this phony smile and mockingly goes around the house sarcastically saying how wonderful everything is. In the last frame he walks out the door, and says “oh nuts, I do feel better.”
We are to be a star. Like a star shining righteousness in a world that doesn't know Jesus Christ. We are to be different than those around us. We are to have an influence on the world, instead of the world influencing the church. And some practical ways is in the way we talk and have our conversations. But when Christians can’t get along, the stars of the universe are obscured by the dark cloud cover of discord.
When Paul Stookey became a Christian I attended a concert to hear his testimony. In one of his songs he included this phrase, "Remember what the stars and the moon are all about." A star is a light shining in darkness. But it gets its light from the sun. The purpose of the heavenly bodies are to reflect the light of the sun. The beauty of them comes from such a glorious reflection. Paul is saying when we reflect Jesus to the wold we are performing like shining stars for His glory. This is a call to being positive.

Shining in Proclamation
Now we are to hold out the word of God so others not only see the witness of our lives, but also the truth that brings to them salvation. How are we to live? By following the instructions in the book given to us by God. Paul was obedient to the call of God in his life and gave his life to sharing this word to Jews and Gentiles alike. He went where no one else would go and proclaim it.
Paul worked and prayed and helped the church to grow. He was the founding pastor of Phillipi. He didn't want to see his work and performance go down the drain. He called them to continue in obedience and in their example to pass on what they were taught. He had the baton and passed it on to them, who responded by faith. It doesn't stop there. Pass it on to others. If you let it drop Paul feels as if the work he did would have been in vain.
We have received the blessings of God through the work and labors and vision of those who went before us. They proclaimed the Gospel in word and deed. They passed on the word of God to the following generation. This church could be closed in 10-15 years unless we also renew the vision and the call to pass on the faith, not just to our children or our grandchildren, but to those God gives to us in this community.
I applaud an 11 year old student has sued her Florida school district and individual school officials for confiscating Bibles that she passed out to classmates after a 6th grade book report. She presented an oral book report on the Bible. She chose this topic because she said she believed the Bible is a very important book, which can serve as a guide for daily living.
During the next period in school the math teacher interrupted her next class and demanded that any child who had received one of the testaments had to immediately turn it over to him. She was called to the principle's office and had been told she had broken the law. Her attorneys claimed that the school violated her constitutional rights of free speech. There is the policy allowing the study of the Bible as part of a secular program of education. For some passing it on can be persecution. That is what Paul is talking about pouring out his life in energy, time, but also in suffering and death.
The day of Christ refers to his coming again and when one will received his rewards because of Paul's willingness to share this word and gospel and not keep it too himself he will be rewarded. So will we. There is the joy of the future as well as the joy of the present. There is no greater joy than to share with you the joy in the Lord with someone and that person or people accept it for themselves and they too enter into a relationship with God himself. Nothing pleases me more as a pastor to have someone have lifted off the burden and guilt of sin and respond in freedom in Christ and then see God working and dwelling in his, or her, life. But don't stop there. Continue to spread the gospel by witness and word while the baton of testimony is proclaimed.
In these verses, Paul is comparing his imprisonment to that of a priest in the O.T. who pours out a drink offering. A drink offering was a portion of wine that was offered burned by fire that had an aroma pleasing to the Lord. Paul’s imprisonment was a trial by fire—there was the possibility that he would be put to death. Yet, from Paul’s vantage point, it would be a joyful and willing sacrifice for Christ’s sake on behalf of the church. Sacrifice and service are two qualities that mark a humble, obedient, Christ-like spirit. Make my joy complete to see you also as the reason for my pouring my self out. You will not longer be depend upon me for your leadership, but Jesus Christ himself will be your leader. Your fidelity and Christian loyalty are already a sacrifice to God and if death for Christ should come to me, I am willing and glad that my life should be poured out like a libation to the lives on the altar one which your sacrifice is being made."
Paul was willing to die that others might believe. He was willing to give his time and energy to see them grow in the faith, but the proof in the pudding is to see them commitment to passing it on, to proclaim the truth.

Christian Attitude Phil 2:1-11
Sermon Nuggets, Mon Sept 20- Christian Attitudes
Verses: Phil 2:1-11
Attitudes
I found the expression interesting when one lady said of another, “She has an attitude”. The first seemed snippy and almost like she was carrying a grudge. The second lady observed this attitude and defined the problem.
When we say someone has an attitude it usually means not a very good disposition. But we all have an attitude. Some days seem good and others not so good. Our attitudes towards our circumstances can affect others.
One day a man decided to conduct an experiment. He put a dog and a cat in a cage together. Initially there was a great struggle. Then they began to live peacefully together. Then he put in the cage a monkey, a tiger, and a bear. After an initial conflict they began to live peacefully together.
Then he put three Baptists in the cage. In a short time nothing was left living in the cage. We laugh, but unfortunately Christians often cannot seem to get along. It was true of Corinth, where Paul proclaimed, "I hear that there be divisions among you." In James’ letter he addressed a church saying, "from whence come wars and fighting among you?" And in our text today, Paul addresses an apparent problem of disunity in Phillippi.
There is a difference between the command to love one another, but when it comes down to individuals that is not so easy. Paul loved the church at Philippi. He wasn’t trying to show them important lessons- That circumstances should affect our happiness? None. For joy comes from the inside, not on the outside. He has imprisoned, he experienced rejection and suffering, but his main purpose of living for Christ and seeing people brought to faith and growing in the faith. So with the right purpose and the right power he was joyful even in prison for those goals were being met.
Paul is practical. He is aware that not everyone is getting along in the church. In chapter four he will talk about a couple ladies who are sparring. He knows it is not good. So he is setting now some principles for Christians in personal relationships that is good for us all to know. There is no greater blessing than people next to God and no greater pain that people.
Let me tell the more you will get involved in Stanchfield, or any church, I can pretty much guarantee two things will happen. You will be blessed as you know and work with some of the greatest people in the world. And secondly you will also get hurt sooner or later. Someone will say something, do something or no do something for which you can take offense if you wish.
Paul wanted the Philippians to look beyond the temporary and look to Jesus whose attitude and actions not only become our example, but our power.
I think Phil 2 shares some of the best words of the Scriptures and gives us focus to our daily lives.

Sermon nuggets Tues Sept 21 –
Verses-
Phil 2:1-5 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus
Recognize the PROBLEM.
The problem Paul will be addressing is an attitude that brings disunity in the church and among people. The problem is pride. It is that lack of humility. People’s pride gets hurt. People don’t think they are treated they way they deserve. People think others take advantage of them.
In a Peanuts cartoon Lucy demanded that Linus change TV channels, threatening him with her fist if he didn't. "What makes you think you can walk right in here and take over?" asks Linus. "These five fingers," says Lucy. "Individually they're nothing but when I curl them together like this into a single unit, they form a weapon that is terrible to behold." "Which channel do you want?" asks Linus. Turning away, he looks at his fingers and says, "Why can't you guys get organized like that?"
I don't want to let Lucy be our example of getting our way, but the unity of the fingers working together might be an illustration. God wants us to be organized to be a team. We think the same. We feel the same.
v3. "Do nothing out of selfish ambition." That's the problem with most relationships. Our egos so easily get hurt. When there is a difference of opinion people want their way done. I had a gym teacher that used to say, "There are three ways to do things- the right way, the wrong way and my way. In my class will do it the third way."
Some serve in the church in the name of Christ, but their motives are not directed to His glory but for themselves. Paul says such service produces "vain glory" or empty glory. In chapter one Paul even spoke of those who preached the gospel, not for Christ’s sake but to increase his suffering while he was in prison. When motives are selfish the chances of causing disunity increase tremendously. We must ask God to search our hearts and ask ourselves why we are doing what we are doing, why we are saying what we are saying. One day those hidden things will be revealed.
I remember one person in a former church we attended who was teaching a Sunday School class, but he did not have the gift of teaching. There were complaint and hoping someone else might take over the class or lose people from coming. How do you get someone out of a job they are willing and wanting to do? That can be touchy. You don't want to hurt the person's feelings. Maybe they'll take offense and never serve again. But you also want to encourage the Sunday School class and people aren't coming because they aren't really getting anything out of the class Sunday after Sunday.
Finally the leader approached and asked if he wouldn't consider a different responsibility in the church. He could have responded in conceit or vain glory, but he wasn't going to remain idle. He loved the Lord and wanted to serve God. So for him that meant there must be a job that no one else wanted, he would be willing to take. After praying about it, he sensed God leading him to personal visitation. He introduced himself to visitors in the church. He went to their home and shared Jesus Christ. He discovered his gift of evangelism! Wow.
Every week he called on people and many had come to a personal acceptance of the Lord. Many continued to come to the church because of his interest in calling on them and befriending them. He was far more effective visiting newcomers than teaching Sunday School. In his mind there was no place for hurt feelings or prima donna attitude.
Some people never take the consideration of others in mind. They are very selfish.
So we too often know the problem of people not getting along as Christians. More times than not it is the cause of selfishness, pride, and vainglory. That's a problem. That’s an attitude that sadly affects too many churches.

Recognize the PRICE for Peace
How do we solve the problem of pride? Well there is a price to pay if you are going to seek unity. It will cost something. In order to have harmony and peace among the fellowship you must consider others people before yourself. This doesn’t mean that we are to think that people are better than we are. It means we are to place their needs above our needs. When it comes down to a conflict between their needs and ours, we are to yield to God and seek to be the first to be used by God to promote peace and unity in our church and our homes.
Let's see how Paul presents this. Ask yourself if your encouragement comes from Christ or from something else. Why do you serve? To get compliments and glory from others? To meet a need in your life? To make you feel good? Or is it an encouragement that comes from Jesus and Him alone?
One person asked me why I have stayed at Stanchfield so long. I could have said because they are such wonderful people. I could have said because they pay me so well. I could have said because they gave me a lovely parsonage to live in. I could have said because I get some very nice letters and notes of encouragement and prayer. But although that helps with a wonderful relationship none of those reasons are why I am here so long. It is simply this: I believe it is God's will that I came here and I believe it is God's will that I am still here. And when it is God's will and purpose to move me, I will move. Period. Now if God leads the congregation to convince me it is time to leave I will listen and obey that as also part of God's leading. Now why did the Lord want me to stay now almost 26 years? I haven't a clue. But apparently my job isn't done yet, or he hasn't finished his preparation work on me yet. But the price for a peaceful relationship is often giving up some personal time for the sake of others. It involves study instead of pleasurable activities. It involves boundaries or there would be burnout, but I have chosen to not demand rights and privileges but agree with leadership even if our decisions do not agree at times. It is to give up my wants to the fellowship of believers under the authority of Jesus Christ.
Now it is easy to work when people are supportive and encouraging and it is hard to work when you are criticized and there seems to be disunity. Yes there has been criticism and times I wanted to quit. There have been times I wanted to respond in revenge to an unkind word. Christ who when reviled, reviled not again. I definitely need his help in this area.
Secondly I need to find comfort from His love. You see, we are not called just to be tolerant of other believers. The world can be tolerant. We are called to love other believers in spite of their sin, in spite of their flaws. The only way we can try to do this is to recognize we have received unconditional love. I know what it means to be loved by God when I have not acted like I should. Can't I try to treat others the way I have been treated by the Lord? I don’t always do that, but it is a goal for Christian unity and peace. It is a price to be paid for greater glory to God.
Then there is a third consideration- Fellowship of the Spirit. Fellowship means sharing or having in Common. What Paul is asking is, "do you have a kinship with other believers that comes from being indwelt by the same Spirit?" The bond of the Holy Spirit goes beyond all other ties.
Think about this. You claim to have the Holy Spirit in your heart. The person you are frustrated with is also God’s child and has the Holy Spirit in his or her heart; for that reason you need to work harder in establishing peace because you have the ingredients that it takes if you really are willing. All believers possess these things. Unfortunately all do not walk in them. Where do you lack? Ask the Lord to reveal it to you and help you in that area.
Paul mentions a fourth thing. “For my sake, as your pastor and leader make me happy by getting along under the leadership of Christ.” Paul had the respect and admiration of the people and could ask them to seek peace as a favor to him and his joy.
The price for peace is submitting our spirits under the authority of Christ and for the good of the whole church. That is giving up your rights you might say.

Phil 2:6-8 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross!
Recognize the PATTERN for humility
These next verses are some of my favorite. Commentators suggest that this was an early hymn that was sung by the church. It certainly follows a poetic pattern, but the meaning is rich and full. Christ is our pattern for humility. Not the low self-esteem, everyone walks all over you, but rather the spirit of referring all things to the Father who is in heaven.
Jesus who being the very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped. We are talking about the difference between roles and responsibilities versus nature. He was God. But he was willing to take a different role and different responsibility. There are two words for formed, “Morphe” and schema” Morphe or form refers not to the outward appearance but the essence of being. This never changes.
A rose for instance might have the form. The flower begins as a seed, and when it is put into the ground it takes difference shapes. It soon becomes a sprout, a bud and blooming flower, or wilting one. But through those various changes it remains the same essence. It may not look the same but it is still a rose.
A person may have lots of outward changes going on. He begins as a fertilized egg and cells begin to form and divide. The essence is human but soon the fetus takes shape, a baby is born. The outward form changes from infant to toddler. The body grows more in proportion to head. Then puberty changes from child to young adult and adult. Unfortunately my body is still changing. I am getting older and it shows. But even in senior years when no teeth, no hair, no hearing, no eyesight there is still the essence of human.
Jesus was the form or essence of god. Deity never changes. But He didn’t consider equality with God something to be grasped. He is God he didn’t have to grasp it in nature. This also relates to the attitude in Christ that was contrasted with the attitude that was in Adam. In Genesis 3 what was the very sin that he and Eve committed? It wasn't just taking the forbidden fruit, though that would have been enough, it was also the desire to be equal with God. Jesus, when called upon, even though it was rightfully his, still gave his rights to God and submitted himself under the authority of the Father God. His divinity did not change but he humbly took a new role. He gave up the exalted position by emptying himself or pouring himself out to come to us and take the role of a servant.
Ish 14 helps us also contrast his attitude with that of Satan. This passage talks about Lucifer and the different spirit he had. For Satan, you see, it was not thy will, but my will be done. Jesus said it the other way around. Satan was a creature and wanted to be the creator. Jesus was the creator and willing to become as one of the creatures.
The word for human form or likeness was the other word used v. 7”shema”. This talks about the outward changes. In other words the servants form is giving and helping and obeying. That is the role or task that Jesus was willing to take out of love for the Father. He was willing to give up his rights and his position of honor to bring to us an example of how to live, and then purchases our salvation by going to the cross and dying a horrible death. This form however changes. Humanness, though very real, was also very temporary thing for Jesus. As a man he was limited. He could no longer be every where at once, He was limited for now in his body he got tired and needed rest. He was limited for he could only do the work as one man. He was limited for he was tempted like never before. He was limited for now he was afflicted with bodily pain and experienced suffering. He now was rejected and beaten and bruised and bloodied. The Bible says that for our sakes became poor, He humbled himself and took the role and form of a servant.
Jesus went from God to man, from creator to creature, from king and ruler of the universe to a carpenter in Nazareth. Jesus went from fellowship with the Father, The Holy Spirit, and the Heavenly hosts of angels to friendship with prostitutes, thieves, lepers, and outcasts, from all the glory of heavenly splendor to the poverty of this world, from creator of the universe to being despised by his own creation. Jesus went from a heavenly mansion to a filthy manger in Bethlehem, from the comforts of glory to the cruel cross of Calvary. Jesus went from the throne to the cross, where instead of hearing, "This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.", to saying "My God My God why hast thou forsaken me?". He went from the very embodiment of righteousness to sin itself, from the very giver and sustainer of life to death. This he did to meet our needs. He looked not on his own things but on our things. Let this illustration of meekness fill your mind and your heart. Let this mind be in you which is also in Christ Jesus. He is our illustration, our inspiration, and he must be our strength.
He was obedient to even death on a cross. There was no limit to the humility that Christ was willing to take for our salvation. Now that is quite some pattern to follow. None of us can do what Christ did, but we can have the servant attitude. We can be children of the most high God, who humbly and obediently offer ourselves as servants unto the Lord and if he asks us to do more than our part for peace, just do it and leave the rest of the record keeping to Him. He does a better job of eventually making things right.

Sermon Nuggets Fri Sept 24 – Prize
Verses- Phil 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Recognize the PRIZE
God does make things right. Now we see the rulership of Christ which He deserves. It is grand and glorious. There is the exaltation of Jesus as Lord over all. Therefore God exalted him and gave Him a name that is above every name. He gave him the highest position. It is all worth it now, for you see, the prize far outweighs the price.
Jesus is exalted and given a name. What is that name? The name Lord. Master, worshipped and praised and glorified by every creature, in and on and under and above the earth. Ultimately there will be a time when all knees will bow in humble submission and all of creatures in heaven and earth will confess the truth that Jesus is Lord. Those who humiliated him and bruised him and killed him and those who rebuked him and spat upon him. They will see that Jesus is Lord. But also those in the 21st century Jesus will be seen in that holy way. There is no other prophet that gives any others message. There is no other name given among men whereby we must be saved. All people will come to realize that.
Does that mean all will come to Christ? No. What it means is on that day there will be two groups kneeling before Christ. One group kneeling in worship and praise for Jesus has overcome. There will be those of us who have said in our hearts, “Jesus I make you my Lord and my savior. I have followed you and served you." And those of us in that group will also be exalted and lifted up. That invitation is open to you, but it involves giving up control and the personal rights that we want to hold so disparately. It means that we too must take on the form the essence of a servant willing to give ourselves to first him and then to others just as he did. He will look up to us and say, “Well done though good and faithful servant!” Oh how I hope that is the group you will be in.
There is another group. They fall on their knees not willingly, but out of compulsion for they have been defeated. A victorious king would have those captured bow before him. That is the picture Paul uses. Satan and all his demonic forces and the majority of the world who have rejected Jesus will now see that he has won the battle and conquered it though the cross. Jesus is alive and reigning as king. They will be forced to admit they were wrong and Jesus is the champion. They will realize based on whatever revelation they had received they rejected the grace of God. They will see it is just. Oh I hope you are not in that group.
Christ received the prize. But Paul wants us to know that it will be worth it for us who follow the Lord, even when we feel we give up too much for the sake of the Lord, even if it means peace with those we don't get along with. For us the price though hard is also worth the prize that God has prepared for each one of us. Certainly we can think of salvation illustrated by the parable of the pearl of great price. A man sees this valuable jewel worth far more than he possesses, but he gives all he has in order to buy it and receives so much more than he possible could give.
So what God offers us is far greater than anything we can give to him. The prize is worth it. But likewise the price for unity makes the prize of unity now and forever worth it as well. The forgiveness granted, the humility experienced, the giving of our rights to God will provide for us reward and blessing now and eventually that we could not experience any other way. It is worth it.
The prize is ours forever. In your relationship Paul points us to the attitude of Jesus Christ. Lets recognize the problem is pride, the Price for unity is humility for peace among Christian brothers and sisters. Let's recognize the pattern we are to follow is none other than Jesus Christ who knows all we are to go through. And the prize is the reward that God has for us as we will reign with him I glory. It will be worth it all.
So have this mind and attitude that is Christ like which is not possible unless we give him over the rights of our lives and set those rights also before the cross.

Attitudes
I found the expression interesting when one lady said of another, “She has an attitude”. The first seemed snippy and almost like she was carrying a grudge. The second lady observed this attitude and defined the problem.
When we say someone has an attitude it usually means not a very good disposition. But we all have an attitude. Some days seem good and others not so good. Our attitudes towards our circumstances can affect others.
One day a man decided to conduct an experiment. He put a dog and a cat in a cage together. Initially there was a great struggle. Then they began to live peacefully together. Then he put in the cage a monkey, a tiger, and a bear. After an initial conflict they began to live peacefully together.
Then he put three Baptists in the cage. In a short time nothing was left living in the cage. We laugh, but unfortunately Christians often cannot seem to get along. It was true of Corinth, where Paul proclaimed, "I hear that there be divisions among you." In James’ letter he addressed a church saying, "from whence come wars and fighting among you?" And in our text today, Paul addresses an apparent problem of disunity in Phillippi.
There is a difference between the command to love one another, but when it comes down to individuals that is not so easy. Paul loved the church at Philippi. He wasn’t trying to show them important lessons- That circumstances should affect our happiness? None. For joy comes from the inside, not on the outside. He has imprisoned, he experienced rejection and suffering, but his main purpose of living for Christ and seeing people brought to faith and growing in the faith. So with the right purpose and the right power he was joyful even in prison for those goals were being met.
Paul is practical. He is aware that not everyone is getting along in the church. In chapter four he will talk about a couple ladies who are sparring. He knows it is not good. So he is setting now some principles for Christians in personal relationships that is good for us all to know. There is no greater blessing than people next to God and no greater pain that people.
Let me tell the more you will get involved in Stanchfield, or any church, I can pretty much guarantee two things will happen. You will be blessed as you know and work with some of the greatest people in the world. And secondly you will also get hurt sooner or later. Someone will say something, do something or no do something for which you can take offense if you wish.
Paul wanted the Philippians to look beyond the temporary and look to Jesus whose attitude and actions not only become our example, but our power.
I think Phil 2 shares some of the best words of the Scriptures and gives us focus to our daily lives.

4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Recognize the PROBLEM.
The problem Paul will be addressing is an attitude that brings disunity in the church and among people. The problem is pride. It is that lack of humility. People’s pride gets hurt. People don’t think they are treated they way they deserve. People think others take advantage of them.
In a Peanuts cartoon Lucy demanded that Linus change TV channels, threatening him with her fist if he didn't. "What makes you think you can walk right in here and take over?" asks Linus. "These five fingers," says Lucy. "Individually they're nothing but when I curl them together like this into a single unit, they form a weapon that is terrible to behold." "Which channel do you want?" asks Linus. Turning away, he looks at his fingers and says, "Why can't you guys get organized like that?"
I don't want to let Lucy be our example of getting our way, but the unity of the fingers working together might be an illustration. God wants us to be organized to be a team. We think the same. We feel the same.
v3. "Do nothing out of selfish ambition." That's the problem with most relationships. Our egos so easily get hurt. When there is a difference of opinion people want their way done. I had a gym teacher that used to say, "There are three ways to do things- the right way, the wrong way and my way. In my class will do it the third way."
Some serve in the church in the name of Christ, but their motives are not directed to His glory but for themselves. Paul says such service produces "vain glory" or empty glory. In chapter one Paul even spoke of those who preached the gospel, not for Christ’s sake but to increase his suffering while he was in prison. When motives are selfish the chances of causing disunity increase tremendously. We must ask God to search our hearts and ask ourselves why we are doing what we are doing, why we are saying what we are saying. One day those hidden things will be revealed.
I remember one person in a former church we attended who was teaching a Sunday School class, but he did not have the gift of teaching. There were complaint and hoping someone else might take over the class or lose people from coming. How do you get someone out of a job they are willing and wanting to do? That can be touchy. You don't want to hurt the person's feelings. Maybe they'll take offense and never serve again. But you also want to encourage the Sunday School class and people aren't coming because they aren't really getting anything out of the class Sunday after Sunday.
Finally the leader approached and asked if he wouldn't consider a different responsibility in the church. He could have responded in conceit or vain glory, but he wasn't going to remain idle. He loved the Lord and wanted to serve God. So for him that meant there must be a job that no one else wanted, he would be willing to take. After praying about it, he sensed God leading him to personal visitation. He introduced himself to visitors in the church. He went to their home and shared Jesus Christ. He discovered his gift of evangelism! Wow.
Every week he called on people and many had come to a personal acceptance of the Lord. Many continued to come to the church because of his interest in calling on them and befriending them. He was far more effective visiting newcomers than teaching Sunday School. In his mind there was no place for hurt feelings or prima donna attitude.
Some people never take the consideration of others in mind. They are very selfish.
So we too often know the problem of people not getting along as Christians. More times than not it is the cause of selfishness, pride, and vainglory. That's a problem. That’s an attitude that sadly affects too many churches.

Recognize the PRICE for Peace
How do we solve the problem of pride? Well there is a price to pay if you are going to seek unity. It will cost something. In order to have harmony and peace among the fellowship you must consider others people before yourself. This doesn’t mean that we are to think that people are better than we are. It means we are to place their needs above our needs. When it comes down to a conflict between their needs and ours, we are to yield to God and seek to be the first to be used by God to promote peace and unity in our church and our homes.
Let's see how Paul presents this. Ask yourself if your encouragement comes from Christ or from something else. Why do you serve? To get compliments and glory from others? To meet a need in your life? To make you feel good? Or is it an encouragement that comes from Jesus and Him alone?
One person asked me why I have stayed at Stanchfield so long. I could have said because they are such wonderful people. I could have said because they pay me so well. I could have said because they gave me a lovely parsonage to live in. I could have said because I get some very nice letters and notes of encouragement and prayer. But although that helps with a wonderful relationship none of those reasons are why I am here so long. It is simply this: I believe it is God's will that I came here and I believe it is God's will that I am still here. And when it is God's will and purpose to move me, I will move. Period. Now if God leads the congregation to convince me it is time to leave I will listen and obey that as also part of God's leading. Now why did the Lord want me to stay now almost 26 years? I haven't a clue. But apparently my job isn't done yet, or he hasn't finished his preparation work on me yet. But the price for a peaceful relationship is often giving up some personal time for the sake of others. It involves study instead of pleasurable activities. It involves boundaries or there would be burnout, but I have chosen to not demand rights and privileges but agree with leadership even if our decisions do not agree at times. It is to give up my wants to the fellowship of believers under the authority of Jesus Christ.
Now it is easy to work when people are supportive and encouraging and it is hard to work when you are criticized and there seems to be disunity. Yes there has been criticism and times I wanted to quit. There have been times I wanted to respond in revenge to an unkind word. Christ who when reviled, reviled not again. I definitely need his help in this area.
Secondly I need to find comfort from His love. You see, we are not called just to be tolerant of other believers. The world can be tolerant. We are called to love other believers in spite of their sin, in spite of their flaws. The only way we can try to do this is to recognize we have received unconditional love. I know what it means to be loved by God when I have not acted like I should. Can't I try to treat others the way I have been treated by the Lord? I don’t always do that, but it is a goal for Christian unity and peace. It is a price to be paid for greater glory to God.
Then there is a third consideration- Fellowship of the Spirit. Fellowship means sharing or having in Common. What Paul is asking is, "do you have a kinship with other believers that comes from being indwelt by the same Spirit?" The bond of the Holy Spirit goes beyond all other ties.
Think about this. You claim to have the Holy Spirit in your heart. The person you are frustrated with is also God’s child and has the Holy Spirit in his or her heart; for that reason you need to work harder in establishing peace because you have the ingredients that it takes if you really are willing. All believers possess these things. Unfortunately all do not walk in them. Where do you lack? Ask the Lord to reveal it to you and help you in that area.
Paul mentions a fourth thing. “For my sake, as your pastor and leader make me happy by getting along under the leadership of Christ.” Paul had the respect and admiration of the people and could ask them to seek peace as a favor to him and his joy.
The price for peace is submitting our spirits under the authority of Christ and for the good of the whole church. That is giving up your rights you might say.

The forgiveness granted, the humility experienced, the giving of our rights to God will provide for us reward and blessing now and eventually that we could not experience any other way. It is worth it.
The prize is ours forever. In your relationship Paul points us to the attitude of Jesus Christ. Lets recognize the problem is pride, the Price for unity is humility for peace among Christian brothers and sisters. Let's recognize the pattern we are to follow is none other than Jesus Christ who knows all we are to go through. And the prize is the reward that God has for us as we will reign with him I glory. It will be worth it all.
So have this mind and attitude that is Christ like which is not possible unless we give him over the rights of our lives and set those rights also before the cross.

Living with Purpose
We have been called upon as a nation to contemplate the fundamental principles for which our nation exists. Our preamble of the constitution states: “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, and insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessing of liberty to ourselves and our posterity do ordain and establish this Constitution for the united States of America.”
Why do we exist? It is for freedom. The important elements of liberty include the need for justice, welfare, and defense, and peace in our land. If we can bring our purpose down to specifics guidelines it helps our president and our congress make decisions. Our purpose is to defend freedom and peace in our land and we will do what it takes.
As a congregation we have been asking ourselves this simple question, “Why does Stanchfield Baptist Church exist?” Last Sunday I wanted to remind us of our main purpose and also a call to individual lives for the next step God wants for us and for you your own spiritual journey. Ultimately we exist for God’s glory. We exist for God’s glory upward in worship, Inward in the fellowship and teaching of our members and attenders, and Outward to our world in need for salvation and for physical and social needs.
Look at the purpose helps us remember our strategy. It helps us ask questions every year. Are we really worshiping God or just going through motions or wanting to do what other churches are doing? We are asking ‘how we are meeting the needs of our congregation- not only when there are hurting and need of help and support, but teaching the word of God and being discipled for the purpose of serving Christ and one another as the body of believers. It helps us not to be so focused on ourselves but remember the call to the many who have not responded by faith in Jesus Christ and those who are hurting in our world, the needy, the lonely, in New York and in all the parts of the world.
It was suggested that we advertise our purpose more because we tend to forget and get involved in things that just are not according to our purpose.
This is what the apostle Paul did in his letter to Philippians. He wanted to identify that which made him tick and have it serve as an example to us all.
The last couple of weeks as we began devotions from the book of Philippians we are reminded that in spite of his imprisonment he is encouraged with a joy that comes within. You can have joy inside even though your circumstances might stink. When there is trouble at work, at home in church, in the world, in the nation you can have an inward joy. His focus helps us understand that joy. His imprisonment has not hindered the spread of the gospel in anyway. On the contrary, it has opened doors that otherwise would have remained closed to him. The Emperor’s own troops are hearing the gospel, the Christians in Rome are getting more involved in spreading the word and, even though motives are suspect with some preachers, the Gospel is getting preached.
Paul now moves into how he as a person is faring under the pressure of captivity and his upcoming trial. It is a very personal passage - we see him refer to himself 20 times within 8 verses. He talks about everything - how he feels, what he wants to live for, who he cares about, his mental condition as he awaits his trial. It serves to help us.

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
Remember your Purpose
Paul informs us that his personal purpose in life is to live for Jesus Christ and the advancement of his good news to the world. He lives knowing that when he dies he will gain an eternal reward and blessing that makes all the difficulties of this life worth it.
Why did the terrorists give their lives in a suicide mission killing 1,000s of people? They had a purpose for which they lived. It was to establish an extreme Moslem world and to destroy any system of government that gets in the way of their goal. Most Moslems will tell you the Mohammed, their prophet, strictly forbids the killing of innocent people, especially women and children, but your fundamentalist Moslem believe that freedom and democracy is of Satan, an evil to be destroyed in order to establish submission to the laws of Koran all people. Their deaths as martyrs are believed to be rewarding by each on having in the afterlife 72 virgins, wine and song. Many are willing to die in a holy war against evil for this brings them straight to this pleasure filled society.
The purpose for which you live will determine how you live. Jesus tells us in a surprising way, how you live will reveal why you live for. He puts it this way, “Where your treasure is, there is your heart also.”
I was reading in Rick Warren’s book, the Purpose Driven Church, where he identifies how board members can disagree based on their understanding of the purpose of the church. Some believe the purpose is to defend traditions because they have such personal meaning and comfort in knowing what to expect. Others seek to look to the pastor or to individuals in the church and make plans around a personality; others determine decisions purely around money with the concept the cheaper the better. Others to church growth. All we do and gear for is to get bigger and more people into the church. Others center their thoughts around the building, or around the unsaved, and so forth.
When a survey was taken among evangelical churches in the country there was a surprising statistic. 85% lay people believed the church’s purpose was to take care of the membership. The pastor’s job was primarily to serve as a shepherd to take care of the needs of the sheep. Surprisingly in their same churches approximately 85% of the pastors states the purpose of the church was to reach out to the unsaved and evangelism.
At the Saddleback church, which Warren pastors, they have developed two guiding principles to be the foundation for their purpose of existence- the great commandment which is carried out in the great commission. The command to love God more than anything else in all the world, and secondly love others is what motivates the commission to go into all the world making disciples of every nation, baptizing them in the name of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey all that Jesus commands.
Have you ever thought about personal purpose? What makes you tick? If I were to ask someone close to you what you live for what types of answers would I get?
For Paul it was easy. It is to live for Jesus Christ. My body belongs to Christ. I have given it to him, my soul belongs to Jesus I have given it to him, My mind belongs to Jesus I have given it to him. I want to live for the glory and work of God period.
Now Paul could do that making tents. He could do that in his traveling. He could even do that while a prisoner. He has simplified the alternatives of his life down to two. He explains, I will either live or die. You don’t have to complicate things do you. If I live, then that will be great, for then I have an eternal purpose. I will live for Jesus and seek to establish and strengthen the church. Paul loved to tell people about Christ love, his death and resurrection and how they might be children of God’s kingdom. He took that message to the unreached parts of the world. He found joy in seeing people get saved and turn their hearts over to Jesus Christ. He delighted to see them mature in their faith. So even when he was in prison, he had the delight of seeing these soldiers come to Christ, to see people in Caesars family come to Christ. He was serving Christ and so fulfilling his purpose.
However, there is another alternative to living and that is dying. What happens if Caesar condemns me to death? Well that’s even better, for then I am with Christ whom I love so dearly. To die Is gain, For you see in this life I have Jesus and if I die I’ll be with Jesus and that will even be better. I hope they kill me. O, wait a minute that’s being selfish, for if they kill me then what about all of you and the things I want you to know the people I haven’t seen come to Christ yet? Oh well, then I’m pretty sure Jesus wants me around, but I really can’t decide which is best, but either way I can’t lose.”
What a fantastic purpose. You can’t lose. I you want me to live, I’ll serve Jesus and if you want me to die, I’ll be with Jesus. You lose either way. I win either way.
What makes you tick? For many it is pleasure and they are miserable when good times are threatened and they are not having fun anymore. For others they live for the children but what happens when the kids are gone? They have nothing to live for. Some live for money and this week is horrible- there is no security in our economy. And one day we will live it all behind. Some live for power. I thought of all the power of these past presidents sitting in the front pews of the national cathedral and thought of their counterparts in other countries, and how quickly that fades away.
There is one thing that lasts for all eternity, and it is life in Jesus Christ now and forever. It is good to remember your purpose.

Verses Phil 1:22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!
23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
Re-evaluate your Circumstances.
Now with your purpose in mind you need to look at your circumstances differently. Most we have no control over our circumstances. If my purpose is living for Jesus Christ, and my end is being with Jesus Christ then I will commit all the circumstances to the sovereign control of Jesus Christ to carry out whatever he wants in my life. He can take all the good and the bad circumstances and use them for His glory.
In other words you can live for Jesus Christ regardless of your circumstances. You cannot have any joy or peace if you live for your children and circumstances change, you can’t have any joy or peace if you live for money and circumstances change. You can’t have joy if you live for power and your circumstances change. You can’t have any joy if you live for pleasure and circumstances change, but you can have joy and peace if your circumstance change if your purpose for living is the glory of Jesus Christ. For then you can be amazed as you watch him work within you and around you to accomplish his purposes.
The circumstances surrounding a severe illness with all the medical problems would make one almost give up on life, but when place in the hands of God and his glory and purpose to witness and help others there is joy. All things work together for good to those who love God and are called to his purpose. There will be unknown number of people helped physically, emotionally and spiritually as a servant of God gave his life and is in the presence of God almighty.
Many of the Apollo astronauts were depressed after their mission. Once they attain to their reason for living they are left disappointed or strangely empty. One of them said his whole life revolved around the mission to land on the moon. Once the mission was completed, he experienced a severe depression. He concluded that the only lasting reason for living had to be found in God, and so he became a Christian. Two other astronauts who went on the moon also became believers.
In light of your purpose re-evaluate your circumstances. I read of Mehdi Dibaj, for example, was imprisoned by the government of Iran in the late 80 ago on charges of "apostasy," since he had converted from Islam to Christianity. The penalty for this crime according to Islamic law was death. Mehdi languished in prison for ten years before his case came to trial. When it did, his written statement of defense was a simple and straightforward affirmation of commitment to Jesus Christ. The last few lines of that defense contain this remarkable paragraph: “[Jesus Christ] is our Savior and he is the Son of God. To know him means to know eternal life. I, a useless sinner, have believed in him and all his words and miracles recorded in the gospel. I have committed my life into his hands. Life for me is an opportunity to serve him, and death is a better opportunity to be with Christ.
Therefore I am not only satisfied to be in prison for the honor of his holy name, but am ready to give my life for the sake of Jesus my Lord...
On December 12, 1993, the court before whom this defense was made sentenced Mehdi to death. He re-evaluated his circumstances in relationship to his purpose. He won. In Christ even his circumstances were given over to the Lord to use for his glory and witness.

Verses: Phil 1: 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.
Renew your Commitment.
Paul’s example also helps us to be challenged to renew your commitment. He wanted the Philippian believers to live to Christ. How do you do that? What does that mean in an every day world?
It means set up your priorities and strategies of life to accomplish your purpose. Be sure that what you do is consistent with what you say. It means to conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. The KJV translates it conversation but in the Greek the word means more than conversations, but certainly does include our conversations- it means whole life.
What you do speaks more loudly that what you say. Someone can say they love their wife, but beat and abuse them is not living like a Christian. One who says they love the Lord and cheat others is not living up to what they say they believe. People who say they follow Christ and steal and lie are dishonoring the name of Jesus.
Paul says renew your commitment to let the Holy Spirit work out his way in your life for that you will live a consistent life with what Jesus is teaching. No, we are not perfect but that doesn’t mean that you don’t try to be. I fail, but I hope that I don’t give up trying to do better. The Holy Spirit convicted me again this week of something that I need to change in my life. I have asked God to not only help me, but convict me and teach me how I can overcome this.
God’s response? “Do you really mean it?” – What do you mean do I really mean it? Then I thought—I hate some sins and some sins I really like. I don’t like the results of some of my sins, but at the time I like it. No, Lord, I guess I don’t really mean it. I just want to pray so I can act like I should, not really wanting to change, jut not wanted the consequences. I need to renew my commitment to want to live for Jesus
Paul is challenged them to stand up and be counted. Unashamed. When the kids make fun of you at school when people are work call you Holy Joe, when the others in the neighborhood get together and don’t want to include you because you make them feel guilty or remarks are said that make you feel uneasy.
It is consistent to stand firm. But Paul is also concerned about their unity. What a sad things when people are not striving together, not contenting as one for the faith.
The churches and people do not work together there is no advancement to their upward inward and outward purpose. It is frustrating to see some churches doing the very things that Satan uses to keep them from carrying out the work in the community.
The renewal of commitment as followers of Christ is for purity, unity, and courage.
To the nation that is officially open to various lifestyles you don’t hear a call to purity but values of freedom and the enjoyment individuals have within our nation to pursue their own dreams. The call to the Christian is to live worthy of the gospel in obedience to Jesus Christ. We are called to purity and integrity and to defend the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
There is no better time to call American believers in Christ to unity for the faith. When people are talking and asking more for prayer and people without purpose are questioning their own values, now is the time to point them to the true savior of the world, Jesus Christ. As we unite under the flag symbolizing freedom, so a greater call is to unite under the cross which purchased eternal freedom from the bondage of sin and hell.
But this spiritual war will also be a call to courage. Courage for the believer of Jesus knowing that there will be times when people are open to the gospel and times when people are opposed to Jesus and his followers.

Verses- Phil 1: 27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel
28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved-- and that by God.
29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him,
30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
Rejoicing in your Hope
In the speech to the nation there is a forward hope that is placed before us. It is the destruction of enemies and the freedoms of America to continue activity without fear and in prosperity once again. We hope for peace. The cost may be high, there maybe causalities and suffering, but the result we strive for will be worth it.
I am glad for the strength we have in so many ways as a nation. We have a strong military, we are still one of the richest countries, we have a strong resolve to freedom, we have people who came from various nations and backgrounds that become our teachers in suffering and are among the most courageous in contending for the future.
But in all this there is still a higher and greater calling we see demonstrated by Paul. I have hope. I am resting in the hope that is seen in your prayers. That gives me hope of physical deliverance, but even if I don’t I’m going to heaven praise God.
I have rejoicing It will turn out for my deliverance. I earlier expect and hope that I will not be ashamed and will have courage to exalt Christ in life and in death. I know I have a hope of going to heaven, which will make all the struggles the jailing, the beatings and the persecution worth it.
The way you face adversity both reveals who you are and strengthens your faith and character to be more like Christ. When precious metals are mined from the earth they’re not yet suitable for use. They must be refined. They’re put into a furnace and the proper amount of heat is applied. The metal melts and the impurities rise to the top where they’re removed. What’s left is a substance uncontaminated by impurities. God is up to the same thing with us. Every time we face difficulties in a godly manner we’re being refined to be brought forth like pure gold.
I am told the story of a young 8-year-old boy was sitting on a wooden pew during the Sunday morning service in a cathedral. He wasn’t particularly interested in the sermon or the topic the preacher was addressing, he was more enamored by the art, the statues and the beautiful stain glass windows. He noticed that the colors were bright, the faces etched in the glass were joyful, and the perfect morning sun illuminated the colors. After eyeing it for several minutes, he was very impressed and whispered to his mother, “Oh mother, who are those people in the colorful stained glass?” His mother replied in a correcting tone, “They are saints. Shhh.”
The next day, the young boy was off to school. At the outset of the history lesson, his teacher announced, “Today we are going to learn about the saints. Can anyone tell me what a saint is?” While others in the class seemed puzzled, the young boy excitedly raised his hand. He replied, “Yes ma’am. Saints have joyful faces. They are colorful and the sun shines through them.” What a call to be lights of the Son of God to shine in us.
Paul reminds the Philippians they need not be afraid. They are on the winning team. Like him they can rejoice in the hope that is theirs because of what Christ has done.
Through the centuries it was the blood of the martyrs that was the seed of the church. When people see the suicide mission of Islamic fundamentals who purposely kill others out of hate it is appalling, but when they see the working together of people seeing to save others from buildings and giving blood for strangers, and collecting gifts for those who help the message of love even to the point of passengers who give their lives to commandeer a plane to crash into the ground rather than into another building of citizen move the passage of self sacrifice to save others out of love.
Jesus is the example of love, of laying down his life for us while we were yet sinners. Paul is rejoicing because the main purpose of his life is being fulfilled. It is living for Christ and to see others come to salvation and that is happening so he is joyful in rough circumstances. He rejoices in is hope because they will share it with them.

If my purpose is living for Jesus Christ, and my end is being with Jesus Christ then I will commit all the circumstances to the sovereign control of Jesus Christ to carry out whatever he wants in my life. He can take all the good and the bad circumstances and use them for His glory.
In other words you can live for Jesus Christ regardless of your circumstances. You cannot have any joy or peace if you live for your children and circumstances change, you can’t have any joy or peace if you live for money and circumstances change. You can’t have joy if you live for power and your circumstances change. You can’t have any joy if you live for pleasure and circumstances change, but you can have joy and peace if your circumstance change if your purpose for living is the glory of Jesus Christ. For then you can be amazed as you watch him work within you and around you to accomplish his purposes.
The circumstances surrounding a severe illness with all the medical problems would make one almost give up on life, but when place in the hands of God and his glory and purpose to witness and help others there is joy. All things work together for good to those who love God and are called to his purpose. There will be unknown number of people helped physically, emotionally and spiritually as a servant of God gave his life and is in the presence of God almighty.
Many of the Apollo astronauts were depressed after their mission. Once they attain to their reason for living they are left disappointed or strangely empty. One of them said his whole life revolved around the mission to land on the moon. Once the mission was completed, he experienced a severe depression. He concluded that the only lasting reason for living had to be found in God, and so he became a Christian. Two other astronauts who went on the moon also became believers.
In light of your purpose re-evaluate your circumstances. I read of Mehdi Dibaj, for example, was imprisoned by the government of Iran in the late 80 ago on charges of "apostasy," since he had converted from Islam to Christianity. The penalty for this crime according to Islamic law was death. Mehdi languished in prison for ten years before his case came to trial. When it did, his written statement of defense was a simple and straightforward affirmation of commitment to Jesus Christ. The last few lines of that defense contain this remarkable paragraph: “[Jesus Christ] is our Savior and he is the Son of God. To know him means to know eternal life. I, a useless sinner, have believed in him and all his words and miracles recorded in the gospel. I have committed my life into his hands. Life for me is an opportunity to serve him, and death is a better opportunity to be with Christ.
Therefore I am not only satisfied to be in prison for the honor of his holy name, but am ready to give my life for the sake of Jesus my Lord...
On December 12, 1993, the court before whom this defense was made sentenced Mehdi to death. He re-evaluated his circumstances in relationship to his purpose. He won. In Christ even his circumstances were given over to the Lord to use for his glory and witness.

Verses: Phil 1: 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.
Renew your Commitment.
Paul’s example also helps us to be challenged to renew your commitment. He wanted the Philippian believers to live to Christ. How do you do that? What does that mean in an every day world?
It means set up your priorities and strategies of life to accomplish your purpose. Be sure that what you do is consistent with what you say. It means to conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. The KJV translates it conversation but in the Greek the word means more than conversations, but certainly does include our conversations- it means whole life.
What you do speaks more loudly that what you say. Someone can say they love their wife, but beat and abuse them is not living like a Christian. One who says they love the Lord and cheat others is not living up to what they say they believe. People who say they follow Christ and steal and lie are dishonoring the name of Jesus.
Paul says renew your commitment to let the Holy Spirit work out his way in your life for that you will live a consistent life with what Jesus is teaching. No, we are not perfect but that doesn’t mean that you don’t try to be. I fail, but I hope that I don’t give up trying to do better. The Holy Spirit convicted me again this week of something that I need to change in my life. I have asked God to not only help me, but convict me and teach me how I can overcome this.
God’s response? “Do you really mean it?” – What do you mean do I really mean it? Then I thought—I hate some sins and some sins I really like. I don’t like the results of some of my sins, but at the time I like it. No, Lord, I guess I don’t really mean it. I just want to pray so I can act like I should, not really wanting to change, jut not wanted the consequences. I need to renew my commitment to want to live for Jesus
Paul is challenged them to stand up and be counted. Unashamed. When the kids make fun of you at school when people are work call you Holy Joe, when the others in the neighborhood get together and don’t want to include you because you make them feel guilty or remarks are said that make you feel uneasy.
It is consistent to stand firm. But Paul is also concerned about their unity. What a sad things when people are not striving together, not contenting as one for the faith.
The churches and people do not work together there is no advancement to their upward inward and outward purpose. It is frustrating to see some churches doing the very things that Satan uses to keep them from carrying out the work in the community.
The renewal of commitment as followers of Christ is for purity, unity, and courage.
To the nation that is officially open to various lifestyles you don’t hear a call to purity but values of freedom and the enjoyment individuals have within our nation to pursue their own dreams. The call to the Christian is to live worthy of the gospel in obedience to Jesus Christ. We are called to purity and integrity and to defend the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
There is no better time to call American believers in Christ to unity for the faith. When people are talking and asking more for prayer and people without purpose are questioning their own values, now is the time to point them to the true savior of the world, Jesus Christ. As we unite under the flag symbolizing freedom, so a greater call is to unite under the cross which purchased eternal freedom from the bondage of sin and hell.
But this spiritual war will also be a call to courage. Courage for the believer of Jesus knowing that there will be times when people are open to the gospel and times when people are opposed to Jesus and his followers.

Verses- Phil 1: 27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel
28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved-- and that by God.
29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him,
30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
Rejoicing in your Hope
In the speech to the nation there is a forward hope that is placed before us. It is the destruction of enemies and the freedoms of America to continue activity without fear and in prosperity once again. We hope for peace. The cost may be high, there maybe causalities and suffering, but the result we strive for will be worth it.
I am glad for the strength we have in so many ways as a nation. We have a strong military, we are still one of the richest countries, we have a strong resolve to freedom, we have people who came from various nations and backgrounds that become our teachers in suffering and are among the most courageous in contending for the future.
But in all this there is still a higher and greater calling we see demonstrated by Paul. I have hope. I am resting in the hope that is seen in your prayers. That gives me hope of physical deliverance, but even if I don’t I’m going to heaven praise God.
I have rejoicing It will turn out for my deliverance. I earlier expect and hope that I will not be ashamed and will have courage to exalt Christ in life and in death. I know I have a hope of going to heaven, which will make all the struggles the jailing, the beatings and the persecution worth it.
The way you face adversity both reveals who you are and strengthens your faith and character to be more like Christ. When precious metals are mined from the earth they’re not yet suitable for use. They must be refined. They’re put into a furnace and the proper amount of heat is applied. The metal melts and the impurities rise to the top where they’re removed. What’s left is a substance uncontaminated by impurities. God is up to the same thing with us. Every time we face difficulties in a godly manner we’re being refined to be brought forth like pure gold.
I am told the story of a young 8-year-old boy was sitting on a wooden pew during the Sunday morning service in a cathedral. He wasn’t particularly interested in the sermon or the topic the preacher was addressing, he was more enamored by the art, the statues and the beautiful stain glass windows. He noticed that the colors were bright, the faces etched in the glass were joyful, and the perfect morning sun illuminated the colors. After eyeing it for several minutes, he was very impressed and whispered to his mother, “Oh mother, who are those people in the colorful stained glass?” His mother replied in a correcting tone, “They are saints. Shhh.”
The next day, the young boy was off to school. At the outset of the history lesson, his teacher announced, “Today we are going to learn about the saints. Can anyone tell me what a saint is?” While others in the class seemed puzzled, the young boy excitedly raised his hand. He replied, “Yes ma’am. Saints have joyful faces. They are colorful and the sun shines through them.” What a call to be lights of the Son of God to shine in us.
Paul reminds the Philippians they need not be afraid. They are on the winning team. Like him they can rejoice in the hope that is theirs because of what Christ has done.
Through the centuries it was the blood of the martyrs that was the seed of the church. When people see the suicide mission of Islamic fundamentals who purposely kill others out of hate it is appalling, but when they see the working together of people seeing to save others from buildings and giving blood for strangers, and collecting gifts for those who help the message of love even to the point of passengers who give their lives to commandeer a plane to crash into the ground rather than into another building of citizen move the passage of self sacrifice to save others out of love.
Jesus is the example of love, of laying down his life for us while we were yet sinners. Paul is rejoicing because the main purpose of his life is being fulfilled. It is living for Christ and to see others come to salvation and that is happening so he is joyful in rough circumstances. He rejoices in is hope because they will share it with them.

Responses to Tragedy
This week nine years ago we remember one of the worst American tragedies. Our hearts were gripped as we watched in horror the destruction of the World Trade Center and sections of the Pentagon where 3,000s of lives were lost. Our nation will no longer be the same. At that time President Bush declared a new type of war already on the United States and we cannot ignore terrorists anymore, for they are no longer in other lands they are among us in our own country. Each year there seems to be tighter security and for our protection surveillance cameras are everywhere.
Contrast the evil lashed against the US, with the many acts of love and outpouring of heroism. My heart was moved more to hear in a TV interview the CEO of financial company housed in the WTC. Of the 1,000 employees he has 700 have been lost. His passion toward the families and their commitment to help one another reminds us that love is stronger than hate and will overcome.
This month there has been controversy over the proposed building of a huge mosque near the site of the Twin Towers. It serves for some as a symbol of victory and for others as a symbol of insult. This week there also opened a new church by Bill Keller designed for evangelism. He plans to bring some of the noted evangelical preachers in to speak on the love of Christ and the importance of being ready for eternity.
What about personal tragedies or set backs? How we face difficulties as a nation or in our families or in our lives serves as reminders that the word of God is current even though it was written 2,000 years ago.
The Apostle Paul is in prison He is chained. I am sure he thought about how fellow servant Peter was in prison and people prayed and the angel of the Lord came and got him out of chains through supernatural means. Isn’t it common our prayer would sound like, “Lord save me like you saved Peter.”? Isn’t that how God is supposed to work? Does God love Peter more than Paul? One is released the other still imprisoned under false pretense.
Warren Wiersbe in his book :Be joyful” reminds us that when things go our way we feel a lot happier and easier to live with. But we have little control over most of the circumstances in our lives. The person whose happiness depends on ideal circumstances is going to be miserable much of the time? The apostle Paul is not living to enjoy his circumstance, he is living to serve Jesus Christ. Paul rejoiced in his chains because they helped to strengthen his fellowship with other Christians, gave him opportunity to lead others to Christ and enabled him to defend the Gospel before the courts of Rome.
As Steward Briscoe said, “He had discovered that things happened to him, in order that things should happen in him, and the things happened in him so that things could happened through him This week we will look at the things that happened because of his circumstances that gave him joy.
As we took at various tragedies in our lives and nation I want to use some responses from this letter to help us in our circumstances.

Verses- 2 Cor 4:7-12 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.
8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;
9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body.
12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.
Some are Crushed
I am not talking about normal grief and heartache which we all feel when something bad happens to us. I am not talking about normal responses to tragedies which are anger, and shock, disbelief, sadness, depression. I heard of psychologist who deals with phobias that when people have experienced an accident they don’t like to go down that road, or maybe even drive for awhile. For someone who has experienced a severe burn have an emotional reaction to fires or fire engine sirens. That may be a reaction that might last for a temporary time, or maybe keep some from normal activity in certain areas.
As we look at the various Psalms of David people find comfort to know he identifies as a man of God with variety of emotions and expressions of feelings as he sings and talks and prays to God, His intimate friend.
Devastation of a home that has lost a loved one or many loved ones understands how tragedies turn your world upside down. The CEO of that financial company lost his brother and whole company and 100s of friends and employees. It is normal to grieve and be in hysteria. But he chose to do something. He chose to cry, and wail, and tell his stories, He chose to give out facts to his employee’s families and provide counseling and a place to go and share in grief together. He chose to make commitments to do everything in his power to help those in need and from an aching and broken heart he is making choices not to be crushed with nothing more to live for.
People who are crushed give up on life, give up on God, give up on hope, give up on love, They have experienced tragedy and hurts to the point they do not see good only evil. They do not feel they should every enjoy life again. Everything about them is seen with negative eyes, pain, sorrow and sadness. There is to brightness is a child’s smile or laughter, for only self pity and pain that cannot and will not accept a world that must face each day with courage.
There are people who make the choice to be crushed and those who do not. The crushed people expect life to always be pleasant and rosy, to be happy and prosperous and when it is not, bitterness resentment, despair are new words that define their very personhood. Not just in a temporary period of time until heals occurs, but makes a point to see that healing will not happen because hatred is not housed into a soul that refuses to turn to God, to others, or even to oneself for solace.
Some are crushed by the circumstances around them. I know a man who lost his wife to cancer. He chose to leave his church, no longer work, have contact with neighbors and was made to believe that his was the worse pain and hers was the worse situation that every happened on the face of the earth. He was a crushed man. He chose to let that cancer be the victory in happiness in life, and died a very broken spirit.
I remember repeated conversations with a woman who cried and cried about the loss of her husband. While providing a sympathetic ear for her I was somewhat surprised to learn it was 25 years earlier that he died. It was a natural death with a heart attack. I asked if it was an anniversary or Birthday that often brings out those memories and grief experiences, but it was not the case. She chose to not leave her home. Because of her loss she refused to participate in normal living and others waited on her. She chose to never enjoy a holiday or make acquaintances with others. She had chosen never to love again.
Have you known people who when difficulty, hardships and tragedies occur they have taken the route of no help, no hope, no way out of the realm of darkness.
Let me tell you that is not the way you have to go, hether it is a victim of abuse, murdered a loved one, or financial loss, painful divorce, or sickness. There is a way for the healing for the soul and facing life again.
Although we are centered on Paul and responses to being imprisoned for the gospel, I turned to the Corinthian passage where he tells himself the truth. The truth is in life he was hard pressed with life and stress and problems of every kind, but refused to be crushed or defeated by them. He acknowledged he was hated for his Christian commitment and was persecuted but he chose to center not on those who rejected him but God and the family of God who understood and loved him. He had dreams dashed, and defeated with plans and purposes, but chose not to be destroyed by those obstacles. Even if he was going to be killed, he chose to look upon the life offered by Christ. But more than that, for the present life he know God was still on the throne of his life and in time will show himself faithful to him. It’s hard, but not without the strength and presence of the Lord. When he cried out to God he found an inner strength and spiritual power to face tragedies of life. Some have no place to turn. He did and so to we.

Verses- Phil 1: 12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.
13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.
Some are Converted
Paul, at 62 years of age, having just spent the last two years in prison in Caesarea for a crime he didn’t commit, Paul appeals to Caesar, as was his right as a Roman citizen. Roman law then required that the person under arrest be delivered to Rome where he would stand trial before the emperor.
The Apostle Paul acknowledge that his chains help accomplish the conversion of people, which is his very purpose for ministry. He wants the gospel of Jesus Christ preached to as many people as possible. He is no longer out in the streets, or in synagogues like he was before, but now he was put into contact with people who would never had heard the message otherwise. They were people of influence the palace guard, the Preatorian Guard which were the Imperial Guard of Rome. It was instituted a number of years earlier by Augustus Caesar, as a special 10,000 guard unit.
These guards also had some political influence in Rome. They were used after a number of years as the body guards of the powerful political leaders and prison guards within the palace for special prisoners. It seems that when an emperor had died another was to be elected. Every one that was elected was the one nominated by the Praetorium Guard. Does that give you an understanding of their political power as well?
Paul’s guard had to be relieved of duty because they were all becoming Christians. He would be in their presence at least 3-4 shifts a day and speak to each one about the Lord Jesus and why he was in trial and there were several Christian visitors came to talk and encourage Paul. Even there now as Paul was dictating this letter to Epaphrodities, there were guards listening to what he is saying. They were getting saved.
The way you endure suffering can stimulate interest in Christ. Paul’s life and witness brought about the conversion of many in Rome. I think that the way you remain true authenticates your witness. Our world is hungry for authenticity. Isn’t it amazing how God uses the sorrows and the successes of our lives and even our nation to communicate the Gospel?
This past week has bothered me in a number of ways. I am also bothered that the TV network producers had been announced this fall they will show more vulgarity and include characters in their shows that will blaspheme God. The article I read tells us the Christians are going to be more attacked at the core of their beliefs. In the news we have headlines of an off-beat preacher and his 50 member congregation planning the burning of Quran day on 9/11. The media is having a hay day and many Muslim can us that as an excuse to degrade and attack Christians. But with that comes others who will declare the truth of Jesus Christ and how we are instructed to act within our world where Jesus is rejected. To love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us we learn a different ethic. I am tired of how the liberal church recreates truth to adapt to our culture and yet how the culture keep molding the church that re assesses their views of the Bible.
During times of tragedy, even such as in Haiti, many re-evaluate the source of hope and meaning and do turn to the Lord.
The world is hungry for someone who will stand up for truth, even if it’s unpopular truth, and say, "I will not compromise what I believe because I stand for those things that are right." That’s authenticity. And when you are an authentic person then your witness is strengthened. Whether it is popular or not, politically correct or not, socially acceptable or not, these days are allows people to come to face the most significant life questions- do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Are you searching for spiritual meaning and purpose? Then there is only one answer for the world. Jesus Christ.
Converted means to turn from your own wisdom and your own way of living, confess your sin, and turn from it to Jesus Christ asking and praying that he will save you; It is a commitment of your will to follow him and to give him your lives. Today you can find that peace that so many already know. It will prepare you for heaven and allow you to know God in a personal and vital way. Will you accept Christ today?

Sermon Nuggets Thurs Sept 9
Verse- Phil 1:14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.
Some are Challenged
Paul noticed not only were many of the guards and prisoners becoming Christians and Rome was paying his bill, he also realized because he was in chains this brought courage to others Christians. They were helped by his ministry, but they were challenged to get personally involved as a result of the tragedy of his arrest and imprisonment. They were brought into unity of spirit in their prayers. It is inspiring for them to preach Christ more boldly, and willing themselves to go to prison if necessary. When someone speaks up strongly with their conviction they become an encouragement to me.
When I went to Russia and visited in the homes of people willing to suffer for their faith I was challenged as a Christian. Now I read that Russia has passed a one year extension of its controversial deadline for religious organization to reregister with the government or face court liquidation. Why is the government so troubled? People are coming to Christ and some religious groups don’t like losing converts.
When I went to India and saw people going into the villages telling Hindus about Jesus Christ and some were preaching the first time in some village. There was a new found challenge that gave Christians courage prompted by the Holy Spirit. Then the country is getting farther away from goal and values then there comes a point of courage to speak out regardless of the consequences.
In times of tragedy many of secret believers have the circumstance to speak up. I know there are people praying together who never even knew there were other fellows Christians. When 9/11 attack occurred, as president of the Braham Ministerial association I asked the school Superintendent if they would like some clergy at the schools to pray and be at the school after news of the attack spread. They provided us a room during the lunch hour. Throughout the four lunch periods over 80 people showed up. I know some kids never knew other kids were willing to pray or come for prayer. I can imagine teachers and staff in the elementary school for the first time holding hands in and reciting the Lord’s prayer together. It challenged faith, and challenged Christians to be more active in sharing what you believe.
There is lots of publicity over the event this Saturday when a pastor is planning on publicly burning the Quaran. There are already great threats among Muslim nations of retaliation as if one person’s freedom of speech is representative of all Christians. Would it not also seem reasonable that one Muslims actions are not representative of all Muslims? We cannot control peoples reactions except our own. But even if there are attack or not there is never a better chance than right of pointing people to the truth of Jesus Christ as some will question purpose and meaning in life to testify of your faith and talk about how Jesus Christ died to save the world and there is peace that passes understanding that keeps our hearts and our minds anchored in Jesus. Not just a belief but a connectedness available with God.
Some need the challenge to follow Christ in baptism, join the church and find your ministry and do it. Paul delights in his tragedy of others are challenged in their service and witness.

Some are Competitive
As Paul is inprison there are some Christians who were glad. Some werejealousy of him. But it got some working for the Lord even though their motives were not entirely correct. How did Paul respond? He was delighted because people were coming to faith in the Lord. That delighted him more than who got the credit. In some incidents there was unity brought about by his supporters. But Paul was a controversial figure. Anyone with strong conviction is going to alienate some people. It was common for any Christian leader to have enemies. Paul certainly did. Perhaps there was a spirit of competition Competition can be both good and evil. The reason for motivation wasn’t as much a concern for Paul as the outcome.
As we enter into another season of political campaigning there is a great deal of criticism among the candidates toward one another. Sometimes it is brutal. I seldom am informed by the ads on TV. Mud slinging has never stopped from election to election. Whatever leadership does there will be people who will criticize, second guess and react so they can be in the limelight. Paul looked at his criticism and realized ultimately the goal wasn't what people felt about him, but people were growting in their understanding of the Lord Jesus Christ. Yes, there were people who were glad for his arrest because now they could be in the limelight. They could take over some leadership. But what was important for Paul was people being helped.
I have talked to chaplains who have worked disasters before. Do you know where some of the stronger competition comes from as to who gets the greatest news coverage. I was surprised.. There is strong competition between the Red Cross ant he Salvation Army as to who can be there first, who can help the most people, who is given the greater news coverage, who will be in charge of directing assistance programs.
Helping and religious organizations are plagued by the human pride problem. Which church gives the most, which hosts the prayer meetings, what pastors are picked for national and local television, who will get the glory?
I know one church that was dead and lifeless spiritually, they were content in a maintenance program. They didn’t really invite neighbors, that weren’t friendly to visitors, they didn’t say much for the Lord, Whenever the preacher tried to get new program or encouraged them to look into the future are develop new programs to reach new folks, they were not interested after all it has worked this way for number of years it will continue to do so many years to come. Do you know what happened? Another church came into town and developed new programs and people started coming to Christ.
This new church reached out to the unchurched. And talked to others about the Lord and set up special meetings. And the older group didn’t want this other church to out do them so they started reviewing their program and started to do some things on their own. It started changing because they were being critical of this new group, but the result was they started doing what they should have been doing all along.
Some peach Christ out of good will and love, for Paul there are critics and enemies in competition with him. Some are out for selfish ambition or selfish gain. Some are preaching to build name for them and get personal attention, for others it doesn’t matter they are seeking to serve God. Paul is saying so long a Christ is being preached and if my chains are being used by my enemies to get them doing something they should be doing, then praise the Lord.
Maybe you have been hurt by another believer and haven’t quite resolved the issue with them. Maybe you need to forgive them or need to ask God forgiveness for having judged them. That’s for you to decide. What about those people, perhaps at work or in your family, who’ve been motivated by jealousy, and have been critical of you… How have you responded toward them? Here, we have a lot to learn from Paul. Has criticism kept you from serving and growing in Christ and in your love for others, then Satan will have gained his advantage in our disagreements, if however, you continue to grow and serve God then what difference do disagreements make. So what if others have different styles of worship, or different priorities of ministry, or don’t understand what God has laid upon your heart, so what? Keep doing what you believe God wants you to do and pray for your enemies and those who have despitefully used you. And keep on.
Remember who you’re working or” That was what kept Paul going. He never worried bout critics he only remembered who he worked for and Christ was using his circumstances.
Funny, isn’t it that very things that Satan tied to use to bind Paul became the very things that the Lord used to make Paul victorious.
How are you facing difficulties? Crushed, Converted, Challenged or Competitive? I believe there are chose that you can make that will help you and others during this time.
The poet puts it this way: "One ship drives east, another drives west with the self same winds that blow. ’Tis the set of the sails & not the gales which determines the way we go,"

Responses to Tragedy
This week nine years ago we remember one of the worst American tragedies. Our hearts were gripped as we watched in horror the destruction of the World Trade Center and sections of the Pentagon where 3,000s of lives were lost. Our nation will no longer be the same. At that time President Bush declared a new type of war already on the United States and we cannot ignore terrorists anymore, for they are no longer in other lands they are among us in our own country. Each year there seems to be tighter security and for our protection surveillance cameras are everywhere.
Contrast the evil lashed against the US, with the many acts of love and outpouring of heroism. My heart was moved more to hear in a TV interview the CEO of financial company housed in the WTC. Of the 1,000 employees he has 700 have been lost. His passion toward the families and their commitment to help one another reminds us that love is stronger than hate and will overcome.
This month there has been controversy over the proposed building of a huge mosque near the site of the Twin Towers. It serves for some as a symbol of victory and for others as a symbol of insult. This week there also opened a new church by Bill Keller designed for evangelism. He plans to bring some of the noted evangelical preachers in to speak on the love of Christ and the importance of being ready for eternity.
What about personal tragedies or set backs? How we face difficulties as a nation or in our families or in our lives serves as reminders that the word of God is current even though it was written 2,000 years ago.
The Apostle Paul is in prison He is chained. I am sure he thought about how fellow servant Peter was in prison and people prayed and the angel of the Lord came and got him out of chains through supernatural means. Isn’t it common our prayer would sound like, “Lord save me like you saved Peter.”? Isn’t that how God is supposed to work? Does God love Peter more than Paul? One is released the other still imprisoned under false pretense.
Warren Wiersbe in his book :Be joyful” reminds us that when things go our way we feel a lot happier and easier to live with. But we have little control over most of the circumstances in our lives. The person whose happiness depends on ideal circumstances is going to be miserable much of the time? The apostle Paul is not living to enjoy his circumstance, he is living to serve Jesus Christ. Paul rejoiced in his chains because they helped to strengthen his fellowship with other Christians, gave him opportunity to lead others to Christ and enabled him to defend the Gospel before the courts of Rome.
As Steward Briscoe said, “He had discovered that things happened to him, in order that things should happen in him, and the things happened in him so that things could happened through him This week we will look at the things that happened because of his circumstances that gave him joy.
As we took at various tragedies in our lives and nation I want to use some responses from this letter to help us in our circumstances.

Verses- 2 Cor 4:7-12 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.
8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;
9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.
10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.
11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body.
12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.
Some are Crushed
I am not talking about normal grief and heartache which we all feel when something bad happens to us. I am not talking about normal responses to tragedies which are anger, and shock, disbelief, sadness, depression. I heard of psychologist who deals with phobias that when people have experienced an accident they don’t like to go down that road, or maybe even drive for awhile. For someone who has experienced a severe burn have an emotional reaction to fires or fire engine sirens. That may be a reaction that might last for a temporary time, or maybe keep some from normal activity in certain areas.
As we look at the various Psalms of David people find comfort to know he identifies as a man of God with variety of emotions and expressions of feelings as he sings and talks and prays to God, His intimate friend.
Devastation of a home that has lost a loved one or many loved ones understands how tragedies turn your world upside down. The CEO of that financial company lost his brother and whole company and 100s of friends and employees. It is normal to grieve and be in hysteria. But he chose to do something. He chose to cry, and wail, and tell his stories, He chose to give out facts to his employee’s families and provide counseling and a place to go and share in grief together. He chose to make commitments to do everything in his power to help those in need and from an aching and broken heart he is making choices not to be crushed with nothing more to live for.
People who are crushed give up on life, give up on God, give up on hope, give up on love, They have experienced tragedy and hurts to the point they do not see good only evil. They do not feel they should every enjoy life again. Everything about them is seen with negative eyes, pain, sorrow and sadness. There is to brightness is a child’s smile or laughter, for only self pity and pain that cannot and will not accept a world that must face each day with courage.
There are people who make the choice to be crushed and those who do not. The crushed people expect life to always be pleasant and rosy, to be happy and prosperous and when it is not, bitterness resentment, despair are new words that define their very personhood. Not just in a temporary period of time until heals occurs, but makes a point to see that healing will not happen because hatred is not housed into a soul that refuses to turn to God, to others, or even to oneself for solace.
Some are crushed by the circumstances around them. I know a man who lost his wife to cancer. He chose to leave his church, no longer work, have contact with neighbors and was made to believe that his was the worse pain and hers was the worse situation that every happened on the face of the earth. He was a crushed man. He chose to let that cancer be the victory in happiness in life, and died a very broken spirit.
I remember repeated conversations with a woman who cried and cried about the loss of her husband. While providing a sympathetic ear for her I was somewhat surprised to learn it was 25 years earlier that he died. It was a natural death with a heart attack. I asked if it was an anniversary or Birthday that often brings out those memories and grief experiences, but it was not the case. She chose to not leave her home. Because of her loss she refused to participate in normal living and others waited on her. She chose to never enjoy a holiday or make acquaintances with others. She had chosen never to love again.
Have you known people who when difficulty, hardships and tragedies occur they have taken the route of no help, no hope, no way out of the realm of darkness.
Let me tell you that is not the way you have to go, hether it is a victim of abuse, murdered a loved one, or financial loss, painful divorce, or sickness. There is a way for the healing for the soul and facing life again.
Although we are centered on Paul and responses to being imprisoned for the gospel, I turned to the Corinthian passage where he tells himself the truth. The truth is in life he was hard pressed with life and stress and problems of every kind, but refused to be crushed or defeated by them. He acknowledged he was hated for his Christian commitment and was persecuted but he chose to center not on those who rejected him but God and the family of God who understood and loved him. He had dreams dashed, and defeated with plans and purposes, but chose not to be destroyed by those obstacles. Even if he was going to be killed, he chose to look upon the life offered by Christ. But more than that, for the present life he know God was still on the throne of his life and in time will show himself faithful to him. It’s hard, but not without the strength and presence of the Lord. When he cried out to God he found an inner strength and spiritual power to face tragedies of life. Some have no place to turn. He did and so to we.

Verses- Phil 1: 12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.
13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.
Some are Converted
Paul, at 62 years of age, having just spent the last two years in prison in Caesarea for a crime he didn’t commit, Paul appeals to Caesar, as was his right as a Roman citizen. Roman law then required that the person under arrest be delivered to Rome where he would stand trial before the emperor.
The Apostle Paul acknowledge that his chains help accomplish the conversion of people, which is his very purpose for ministry. He wants the gospel of Jesus Christ preached to as many people as possible. He is no longer out in the streets, or in synagogues like he was before, but now he was put into contact with people who would never had heard the message otherwise. They were people of influence the palace guard, the Preatorian Guard which were the Imperial Guard of Rome. It was instituted a number of years earlier by Augustus Caesar, as a special 10,000 guard unit.
These guards also had some political influence in Rome. They were used after a number of years as the body guards of the powerful political leaders and prison guards within the palace for special prisoners. It seems that when an emperor had died another was to be elected. Every one that was elected was the one nominated by the Praetorium Guard. Does that give you an understanding of their political power as well?
Paul’s guard had to be relieved of duty because they were all becoming Christians. He would be in their presence at least 3-4 shifts a day and speak to each one about the Lord Jesus and why he was in trial and there were several Christian visitors came to talk and encourage Paul. Even there now as Paul was dictating this letter to Epaphrodities, there were guards listening to what he is saying. They were getting saved.
The way you endure suffering can stimulate interest in Christ. Paul’s life and witness brought about the conversion of many in Rome. I think that the way you remain true authenticates your witness. Our world is hungry for authenticity. Isn’t it amazing how God uses the sorrows and the successes of our lives and even our nation to communicate the Gospel?
This past week has bothered me in a number of ways. I am also bothered that the TV network producers had been announced this fall they will show more vulgarity and include characters in their shows that will blaspheme God. The article I read tells us the Christians are going to be more attacked at the core of their beliefs. In the news we have headlines of an off-beat preacher and his 50 member congregation planning the burning of Quran day on 9/11. The media is having a hay day and many Muslim can us that as an excuse to degrade and attack Christians. But with that comes others who will declare the truth of Jesus Christ and how we are instructed to act within our world where Jesus is rejected. To love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us we learn a different ethic. I am tired of how the liberal church recreates truth to adapt to our culture and yet how the culture keep molding the church that re assesses their views of the Bible.
During times of tragedy, even such as in Haiti, many re-evaluate the source of hope and meaning and do turn to the Lord.
The world is hungry for someone who will stand up for truth, even if it’s unpopular truth, and say, "I will not compromise what I believe because I stand for those things that are right." That’s authenticity. And when you are an authentic person then your witness is strengthened. Whether it is popular or not, politically correct or not, socially acceptable or not, these days are allows people to come to face the most significant life questions- do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Are you searching for spiritual meaning and purpose? Then there is only one answer for the world. Jesus Christ.
Converted means to turn from your own wisdom and your own way of living, confess your sin, and turn from it to Jesus Christ asking and praying that he will save you; It is a commitment of your will to follow him and to give him your lives. Today you can find that peace that so many already know. It will prepare you for heaven and allow you to know God in a personal and vital way. Will you accept Christ today?

Verse- Phil 1:14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.
Some are Challenged
Paul noticed not only were many of the guards and prisoners becoming Christians and Rome was paying his bill, he also realized because he was in chains this brought courage to others Christians. They were helped by his ministry, but they were challenged to get personally involved as a result of the tragedy of his arrest and imprisonment. They were brought into unity of spirit in their prayers. It is inspiring for them to preach Christ more boldly, and willing themselves to go to prison if necessary. When someone speaks up strongly with their conviction they become an encouragement to me.
When I went to Russia and visited in the homes of people willing to suffer for their faith I was challenged as a Christian. Now I read that Russia has passed a one year extension of its controversial deadline for religious organization to reregister with the government or face court liquidation. Why is the government so troubled? People are coming to Christ and some religious groups don’t like losing converts.
When I went to India and saw people going into the villages telling Hindus about Jesus Christ and some were preaching the first time in some village. There was a new found challenge that gave Christians courage prompted by the Holy Spirit. Then the country is getting farther away from goal and values then there comes a point of courage to speak out regardless of the consequences.
In times of tragedy many of secret believers have the circumstance to speak up. I know there are people praying together who never even knew there were other fellows Christians. When 9/11 attack occurred, as president of the Braham Ministerial association I asked the school Superintendent if they would like some clergy at the schools to pray and be at the school after news of the attack spread. They provided us a room during the lunch hour. Throughout the four lunch periods over 80 people showed up. I know some kids never knew other kids were willing to pray or come for prayer. I can imagine teachers and staff in the elementary school for the first time holding hands in and reciting the Lord’s prayer together. It challenged faith, and challenged Christians to be more active in sharing what you believe.
There is lots of publicity over the event this Saturday when a pastor is planning on publicly burning the Quaran. There are already great threats among Muslim nations of retaliation as if one person’s freedom of speech is representative of all Christians. Would it not also seem reasonable that one Muslims actions are not representative of all Muslims? We cannot control peoples reactions except our own. But even if there are attack or not there is never a better chance than right of pointing people to the truth of Jesus Christ as some will question purpose and meaning in life to testify of your faith and talk about how Jesus Christ died to save the world and there is peace that passes understanding that keeps our hearts and our minds anchored in Jesus. Not just a belief but a connectedness available with God.
Some need the challenge to follow Christ in baptism, join the church and find your ministry and do it. Paul delights in his tragedy of others are challenged in their service and witness.

Some are Competitive
As Paul is inprison there are some Christians who were glad. Some werejealousy of him. But it got some working for the Lord even though their motives were not entirely correct. How did Paul respond? He was delighted because people were coming to faith in the Lord. That delighted him more than who got the credit. In some incidents there was unity brought about by his supporters. But Paul was a controversial figure. Anyone with strong conviction is going to alienate some people. It was common for any Christian leader to have enemies. Paul certainly did. Perhaps there was a spirit of competition Competition can be both good and evil. The reason for motivation wasn’t as much a concern for Paul as the outcome.
As we enter into another season of political campaigning there is a great deal of criticism among the candidates toward one another. Sometimes it is brutal. I seldom am informed by the ads on TV. Mud slinging has never stopped from election to election. Whatever leadership does there will be people who will criticize, second guess and react so they can be in the limelight. Paul looked at his criticism and realized ultimately the goal wasn't what people felt about him, but people were growting in their understanding of the Lord Jesus Christ. Yes, there were people who were glad for his arrest because now they could be in the limelight. They could take over some leadership. But what was important for Paul was people being helped.
I have talked to chaplains who have worked disasters before. Do you know where some of the stronger competition comes from as to who gets the greatest news coverage. I was surprised.. There is strong competition between the Red Cross ant he Salvation Army as to who can be there first, who can help the most people, who is given the greater news coverage, who will be in charge of directing assistance programs.
Helping and religious organizations are plagued by the human pride problem. Which church gives the most, which hosts the prayer meetings, what pastors are picked for national and local television, who will get the glory?
I know one church that was dead and lifeless spiritually, they were content in a maintenance program. They didn’t really invite neighbors, that weren’t friendly to visitors, they didn’t say much for the Lord, Whenever the preacher tried to get new program or encouraged them to look into the future are develop new programs to reach new folks, they were not interested after all it has worked this way for number of years it will continue to do so many years to come. Do you know what happened? Another church came into town and developed new programs and people started coming to Christ.
This new church reached out to the unchurched. And talked to others about the Lord and set up special meetings. And the older group didn’t want this other church to out do them so they started reviewing their program and started to do some things on their own. It started changing because they were being critical of this new group, but the result was they started doing what they should have been doing all along.
Some peach Christ out of good will and love, for Paul there are critics and enemies in competition with him. Some are out for selfish ambition or selfish gain. Some are preaching to build name for them and get personal attention, for others it doesn’t matter they are seeking to serve God. Paul is saying so long a Christ is being preached and if my chains are being used by my enemies to get them doing something they should be doing, then praise the Lord.

Making it Through Hard Times
What hard times have you gone through or are going through? Loss job, loss of friends, maybe it is being misunderstood? Do you feel people are taking advantage of you, or worse yet, out to get you in some way? Trouble with the law? Trouble with other Christians?
There is one I want to thin about who went through hard times. He was jailed and beaten several times and under the threat to be killed. I call that hard times. Yet when you hear from him you would not imagine he was facing any of those things because of his positive spirit. I’m talking about the Apostle Paul and referring to his letter to the believers at Philippi. He is writing from a cold, cark, camp prison. Telling his friend Epaprodities what to say to the friends at Philippi.
Paul loved to preach and speak in synagogues he was taking the gospel were no other man has gone, to people others didn’t want to be with. But now he is locked in a cell unable to do any of those ministries. Yet God uses those letters as divine Scripture to instruct disciples for millenniums. I am sure that was not in Paul’s mind, but it was in God’s mind. He saw to it Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit not writing to just the particular needs in Philippi but indeed all the churches to come. He is writing to the believers at Stanchfield by the power of the Holy Spirit.
When I go through hard times, I complain wanting God to take care of it and right away if you please. Happiness tends to be so circumstance related. When good things happen I am happy. When bad things happen, I am not so happy. Happiness or pleasure is entirely dependent on circumstances. It is temporary
This man, Paul, by the world’s standards has nothing to be joyful about, yet that is the theme of his letter- JOY. Joy is of a different character. Joy is independent of circumstances. Joy is that which encompasses and transcends both happiness and sadness. Once endowed with joy, a person is not likely to lose it and in fact it grows with awareness of it. Happiness comes from humans, joy from God.
He writes to believers and many of these people he had the privilege of leading to Jesus Christ. So he refers to himself and Timothy as servants and the church as saints.
A saint isn’t a term for holier than thou , A saint isn’t a term some Catholics like to use for special people that deserve canonizing. No, Saint means they be have made pure by the blood of Jesus Christ. You and I are saints if you have make Jesus Christ your Lord in a personal way. If you have committed your life to Christ you are a saint.
There is no real joy for anyone ultimately without this precondition. If you want joy, real joy, wonderful joy, let Jesus come into your heart. If you are without Jesus and following your own pleasures or wisdom or priories of life this faith in Christ is the place to start today. All of us have going through hard times. I don’t think anyone is exempt. Some have had it worse than others. Almost all of you will say repeatedly, “If it wasn’t for the Lord, I don’t know what I would have done.” Most people will say that one key that helps is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. God is there to uphold and lift you up even when you do not understand why things happen the way they do.
The second thing mentioned is friends or family. People need people. As I begin a series from the book of Philippians this week we will look at how Paul demonstrates, not describes, but demonstrates joy in facing hard times.

Verses Phil 1:3-6 I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Memories Help when going through Hard Times.
Memories are something that are rich. No one can take them away from us. I think back on experiences or people, or conversations that are positive and it brings delight even in a bad situation.
Paul had a lot of time to think in prison. He thought back a few years when he first met the people in Philippi. They were mostly Gentiles. He was directed to go there through a Macedonian vision or call from God. He had an unusual call that so dramatically confirmed Paul’s direction in his life. This was a place for divine appointments. God moved in great way in Philippi.
But next to their faith in God, most will say how much encouragement they have from good friends and family. Certainly, the support I get from people means so much. Notice the people make a difference in Paul’s life. The past that he has shared with them gives him encouragement.
He no doubt thought of Lydia the seller of purple goods. He stayed with her for she loved God and wanted to find out all she could from Paul. He remembered another slave girl from the other extreme economically and socially. The slave girl was not selling clothing and making clothes for royalty and the rice, but was demon possessed and under the bondage of men using her Satanic power for tell fortunes and soothsaying, Paul said, “I charge you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And in commanding those devils she was set from bondage, but also no longer profitable to her owners. They were very upset with Paul. People don’t usually get too concerned with Christians trying to influence others for righteousness until they are faced with some losing some money. When we take a stand against the works of Satan to keep people from bondage of alcohol, Tobacco, sexual addictions, gambling, abortions the industry and community howl and get very upset.
One of the nastiest letters I got was when I protested a video store in Cambridge renting X rated movies. I said I wouldl make public the video stores that agree to not rent X rated movies, so people in the church can choose to support those stores if they wish. Some people make lots of money off those industries that addict people. They want their money and don’t care who and how many are ruined because of it.
So these angry men trumped up charges against Paul and dragged him and Silas into a market place and told the political leaders they are doing things against the new Roman law. Paul was taken and had his clothes ripped off his body and beaten with a whip, along with Silas. There they were in the Philippian jail, bloody and bruised, kept in stocks and bonds in the innermost prison and from the lips of Paul the other prisoners heard a most unusual sound. It was of singing praise to God. Joy in hard times? How can that be? Except his spirit was lifted beyond his circumstances counting it worthy to suffer for his Lord.
Imagine singing praises at midnight and preaching to the prisoners, when the great earthquake came. Paul even smiles now as he remembers it. The jailer was petrified. He was asleep and saw all the jail doors opened and chains unloosed. The Jail was so upset he was about to kill himself when Paul stopped him and told him that all was safe. “Men what must I do to be saved?” was his heart’s cry. It was in Philippi that these famous words are recorded for us. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.” And that man responded and told his family and they responded and in the middle of the night they went right to the river and were baptized. Funny congregation wasn’t it?- Jailer, slave girl rich lady, these were the core members for a new church.
Paul is filled with joy, for even now he is remembering them and their partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.
Memories are important for people unable to be where they want to be. Soldiers are encouraged by letters and photographs that caused them to rejoice with memories. Prisoners in Rush City and elsewhere find life is bearable when they stop thinking about their conditions and circumstances but center their thoughts on the members of loved ones and plans for their future.
I heard from a lady I had a hand in seeing come to Christ and now 35 years later she is still walking with the Lord. I was overjoyed. I went to the reunion of Olivet Baptist 50th anniversary and talked with some of the kids in the youth group and found they are growing in the faith and the problems they had at 18 now at 43 years of age having a Christian family and involved in their churches excited me.

Prayer Helps when going through Hard Times
Paul found talking to God is a blissful activity in and of itself. The communication with the Lord is wonderful especially during the hard times. Unfortunately that is the only time when some people turn to prayer. But the focus of his prayer is also on the people. There is so much hope and excitement when there is positive things happened in lives.
Paul begins by teaching that prayer must be a first response rather than a last resort. Listen to vs. 3, "I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy..." Then, in chapter 4, vs. 6, he says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer & petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
Do you realize what Paul is saying? He is saying that whenever anything happens to him, whether positive or negative, he prays. That’s his first response. He prays, "God, thank you for the blessings that you give me. God, I even thank you for the troubles that come my way. Now teach me the lessons that I need to learn from them." Paul always started with prayer.
Paul could not be with them to preach, nor to teach other than by letters, but there was and is a present activity that is of the Lord it is prayer. Reflecting on what was right in the world rather than his bleak situation also reminded Paul that he was not alone. He knew that the Philippian believers were praying for him and thinking about him whether he was in jail or out evangelizing the nations.
But the encouragement with prayer is the recognition of the partnership each has with the gospel. We are not lone rangers in the Lord’s work. God designed us to be dependant upon Him and interdependent upon one another. Paul could not do the work alone. He needed people to give, and pray, and support, and help, like Timothy.
Dear people, regardless of your circumstances some of the best workers at Stanchfield Baptist are those who are unable to get out of their homes, but take the responsibilities of prayer very seriously, and very faithfully. Those prayer chain calls are marked and checks on them indicating the date and time of their prayers. The requests of the pastors and the people and leaders are prayed for. Some will go through their membership telephone book and pray for the people and their children. What a remarkable and joyful activity.
There are people who every day lift me up in their prayers as the pastor. What a wonderful blessing and privilege. But they also find joy in serving Jesus and having a part in the ministry. I remember one lady who when someone mentioned prayer for friend who didn’t know Christ they prayed for that person and when they accepted Christ they were so overjoyed as well because they worked on the evangelistic team of praying that person to conviction of the Holy spirit.
Do you pray for others that they know the best way to discern the will of God? The joy that Paul knew was to bring his friends into the mercy seat of Christ to communicate on behalf of others Paul shows bring joy even when it prison for he has a spiritual job to do and that is to keep on praying for the work and the people.

Verses- Phil 1:7-8 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me.

Love Helps when going through Hard Times
Love is one of the ingredients for joy. It is the love folks have for one another that keeps people going during hard times. Paul tells them that he has the Philippian believers in his heart. He loves the church very much and can be filled with joy because someone out there is think about him and praying for him as he is praying for them. Paul reflected on his connection with the Philippian believers. He reflected on how much they loved him and he them. Those thoughts filled him with the same joy that you get when you look at your child’s picture or get a mental image of someone you have a mutual love relationship with.
As we have been observing the drama of the 33 trapped miners in Chile they were encouraged not only when contact was made and they have the hope of rescue, but what is on their hearts and minds is their loved ones. The notes expressing love were sent up to the waiting families. The video cam as well as a phone line boasted their spirits during their hard times knowing they have a reason for living and keep preserving. They needed food and water and medicine. The best medicine was loved ones.
Victor Frankel the German psychologist was put in the SS camp at Auschwitz, during WW II. He developed the science of logotheraphy centering on the will of meaning in lives. Frankl may not be a Christian, but he looked at many Christians in the camp along with others who were motivated by a loved one at home or faith in God, or strength through these hope of reuniting and saw the tremendous strength that allowed these men to endure tremendous hardship.
I John 3:15 says, “We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remain in death.”
I know the people at Grasston and Braham Covenant and First Baptist but I don’t have the same feeling for them as the people at Stanchfield. There is an affinity and love that God gives. And time and again you have shown my family love that has been a great encouragement and wonder. Paul saw this and was encouraged when realized that he could love them and wanted to find out all about them and likewise realized that they loved him too. And that was adding his comfort while in prison. They were constantly on his mind. .
Paul said he was even willing to be in chains that they might so know the love of Christ

Growing in Christ Helps you Make it in Hard Time v.9-11
Paul saw that people changed. He saw the work that God was doing in their lives and his heart was so uplifted. People can change, and so can you as one matures and grows in their relationship with Jesus Christ.
Perhaps in your life you are thinking it takes so long to be the person I want to be. Paul saw how the Lord was working in his life and how depending more on Jesus than circumstances established him in hard times. He continued to focus upward and outward instead of inward. He looked to the goal and not so much in the process of his faith. But as we allow Christ to have more of us, we become more like him.
He who has begun a good work in you will complete it. Isn’t that a great joy? God isn’t finished with you yet. God isn’t finished with me yet. Pastor Bob Grover would say to me, “The biggest room in the world is room for improvement.” I wonder why he keeps telling me that.
It’s true. There is the joy of knowing God has done a great work in our lives, but it is joyful to know that he is not done yet. There is more to do.
Paul looks at what God is doing in their spiritual lives and that lifts his spirits. People grow in the knowledge of the Lord and in the depth of understanding. We grow in the knowledge of God in reading the Bible in prayer and Sunday School, small groups, fellowship with the believers, and serving with our gifts. Paul took the time to refocus on his hope for the future. He saw what God did in the past. He looked forward to what was still to come. He refocused on his mission. Paul was excited by the prospects of the Philippian believers achieving Christ-likeness.
If you love someone you want to find out all you can about them. If they love Jesus they want to grow in the knowledge of Christ and that motivates them to know him more. There is confidence and hope. Growth is the hope that is yet to come.
When people are going through hard times it is joyful to know that this isn’t where it stops. Paul’s ultimate faith is in the Lord. He knows that the power of God is greater than he that is in the world.
Someone said if you like the changes you see in me now, just wait another 120 years. The spirit molds us into the fruits if we let him have his way in us. Gal 5:22-23. Paul is confident and excited because of gods work and the reward and goal. Vs. 10 the day of Christ, He knows that joy because those many don’t realize it there is a day coming when all will be completely well. Don’t worry about the future for Christian it can only get better. Complete joy in the presence of Jesus and that is what he is looking forward toward. He can’t lose. Even in a dungy cell it can be a place of worship and joy.
Paul’s confidence is in the promises of Jesus and the work to fruit of righteousness come through Jesus to the Glory and praise of God. Christian aim is to live such a life that the glory and praise are given to God. Christian goodness is not meant to win praise and credit and honor and prestige for self, bur rather praise for God. That is what gives Paul joy, not worried about self. But Kingdom is growing it is happening to Philippians whom he loves.
What are your prisons? Where are your dungeons that Satan would have you bound? Where are the potential problems that would bring disappointment and discouragement? Sickness. Family trouble, financial difficulty emotional uneasiness. May Paul’s joy be our joy, for it comes from the Lord.

Making it Through Hard Times
What hard times have you gone through or are going through? Loss job, loss of friends, maybe it is being misunderstood? Do you feel people are taking advantage of you, or worse yet, out to get you in some way? Trouble with the law? Trouble with other Christians?
There is one I want to thin about who went through hard times. He was jailed and beaten several times and under the threat to be killed. I call that hard times. Yet when you hear from him you would not imagine he was facing any of those things because of his positive spirit. I’m talking about the Apostle Paul and referring to his letter to the believers at Philippi. He is writing from a cold, cark, camp prison. Telling his friend Epaprodities what to say to the friends at Philippi.
Paul loved to preach and speak in synagogues he was taking the gospel were no other man has gone, to people others didn’t want to be with. But now he is locked in a cell unable to do any of those ministries. Yet God uses those letters as divine Scripture to instruct disciples for millenniums. I am sure that was not in Paul’s mind, but it was in God’s mind. He saw to it Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit not writing to just the particular needs in Philippi but indeed all the churches to come. He is writing to the believers at Stanchfield by the power of the Holy Spirit.
When I go through hard times, I complain wanting God to take care of it and right away if you please. Happiness tends to be so circumstance related. When good things happen I am happy. When bad things happen, I am not so happy. Happiness or pleasure is entirely dependent on circumstances. It is temporary
This man, Paul, by the world’s standards has nothing to be joyful about, yet that is the theme of his letter- JOY. Joy is of a different character. Joy is independent of circumstances. Joy is that which encompasses and transcends both happiness and sadness. Once endowed with joy, a person is not likely to lose it and in fact it grows with awareness of it. Happiness comes from humans, joy from God.
He writes to believers and many of these people he had the privilege of leading to Jesus Christ. So he refers to himself and Timothy as servants and the church as saints.
A saint isn’t a term for holier than thou , A saint isn’t a term some Catholics like to use for special people that deserve canonizing. No, Saint means they be have made pure by the blood of Jesus Christ. You and I are saints if you have make Jesus Christ your Lord in a personal way. If you have committed your life to Christ you are a saint.
There is no real joy for anyone ultimately without this precondition. If you want joy, real joy, wonderful joy, let Jesus come into your heart. If you are without Jesus and following your own pleasures or wisdom or priories of life this faith in Christ is the place to start today. All of us have going through hard times. I don’t think anyone is exempt. Some have had it worse than others. Almost all of you will say repeatedly, “If it wasn’t for the Lord, I don’t know what I would have done.” Most people will say that one key that helps is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. God is there to uphold and lift you up even when you do not understand why things happen the way they do.
The second thing mentioned is friends or family. People need people. As I begin a series from the book of Philippians this week we will look at how Paul demonstrates, not describes, but demonstrates joy in facing hard times.

In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Memories Help when going through Hard Times.
Memories are something that are rich. No one can take them away from us. I think back on experiences or people, or conversations that are positive and it brings delight even in a bad situation.
Paul had a lot of time to think in prison. He thought back a few years when he first met the people in Philippi. They were mostly Gentiles. He was directed to go there through a Macedonian vision or call from God. He had an unusual call that so dramatically confirmed Paul’s direction in his life. This was a place for divine appointments. God moved in great way in Philippi.
But next to their faith in God, most will say how much encouragement they have from good friends and family. Certainly, the support I get from people means so much. Notice the people make a difference in Paul’s life. The past that he has shared with them gives him encouragement.
He no doubt thought of Lydia the seller of purple goods. He stayed with her for she loved God and wanted to find out all she could from Paul. He remembered another slave girl from the other extreme economically and socially. The slave girl was not selling clothing and making clothes for royalty and the rice, but was demon possessed and under the bondage of men using her Satanic power for tell fortunes and soothsaying, Paul said, “I charge you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And in commanding those devils she was set from bondage, but also no longer profitable to her owners. They were very upset with Paul. People don’t usually get too concerned with Christians trying to influence others for righteousness until they are faced with some losing some money. When we take a stand against the works of Satan to keep people from bondage of alcohol, Tobacco, sexual addictions, gambling, abortions the industry and community howl and get very upset.
One of the nastiest letters I got was when I protested a video store in Cambridge renting X rated movies. I said I wouldl make public the video stores that agree to not rent X rated movies, so people in the church can choose to support those stores if they wish. Some people make lots of money off those industries that addict people. They want their money and don’t care who and how many are ruined because of it.
So these angry men trumped up charges against Paul and dragged him and Silas into a market place and told the political leaders they are doing things against the new Roman law. Paul was taken and had his clothes ripped off his body and beaten with a whip, along with Silas. There they were in the Philippian jail, bloody and bruised, kept in stocks and bonds in the innermost prison and from the lips of Paul the other prisoners heard a most unusual sound. It was of singing praise to God. Joy in hard times? How can that be? Except his spirit was lifted beyond his circumstances counting it worthy to suffer for his Lord.
Imagine singing praises at midnight and preaching to the prisoners, when the great earthquake came. Paul even smiles now as he remembers it. The jailer was petrified. He was asleep and saw all the jail doors opened and chains unloosed. The Jail was so upset he was about to kill himself when Paul stopped him and told him that all was safe. “Men what must I do to be saved?” was his heart’s cry. It was in Philippi that these famous words are recorded for us. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.” And that man responded and told his family and they responded and in the middle of the night they went right to the river and were baptized. Funny congregation wasn’t it?- Jailer, slave girl rich lady, these were the core members for a new church.
Paul is filled with joy, for even now he is remembering them and their partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.
Memories are important for people unable to be where they want to be. Soldiers are encouraged by letters and photographs that caused them to rejoice with memories. Prisoners in Rush City and elsewhere find life is bearable when they stop thinking about their conditions and circumstances but center their thoughts on the members of loved ones and plans for their future.
I heard from a lady I had a hand in seeing come to Christ and now 35 years later she is still walking with the Lord. I was overjoyed. I went to the reunion of Olivet Baptist 50th anniversary and talked with some of the kids in the youth group and found they are growing in the faith and the problems they had at 18 now at 43 years of age having a Christian family and involved in their churches excited me.
Think back on how God has worked in your life with others and get perspective of your situation.
